My Veg Life & Eating Raw

I don’t have any training updates for you today because I haven’t run or WODed all week. I feel much better so I’ll be back on the trails and into the gym soon.

Meanwhile I thought I would give you an update on my raw eating adventures. You know I have been a vegetarian for half my life. I’ve had my ups and downs with my diet. For good long stretches I have been a super strict & healthy vegetarian. Other times I have been a horrible example of a vegetarian – too much processed “vegetarian” crap and not enough real food.

I’ve flirted with adding fish to my diet and eating like the locals in foreign countries. I’ve shared bread with carnivores and drank wine with omnivores.

But in the end I always return with fork in hand to my plant eating ways.

I’ve been curious about the lifestyle for quite some time. A number of years ago I went to a raw food festival in Ottawa. I was so impressed with the spread. However it’s only been in the last few months that I delved into research and started thinking seriously about making a change. I don’t have plans to go 100 per cent raw. But I would like to add some components of it to my diet.

Eating raw seems to fit nicely with my plant-based diet. Raw foodists diet eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts, all of which I eat on a regular basis. So really what harm can it do?

Raw foodists believe that cooking kills the good enzymes essential to human health. Think unprocessed and uncooked (Food should not be cooked above 115 degrees.) They swear on a head of lettuce that they have more energy, better skin and better digestion since going raw. I can’t argue with that. I truly believe that fruits and vegetables are Mother Nature’s true natural elixir.

But I don’t want to simply eat a big salad and call it raw. (Although technically it is.) I want to try some recipes using nuts and seeds. My crackers have received some rave reviews. I used this recipe from the Rawtarian for my basic cracker.

Yesterday I changed it up a bit and took some ideas from Addicted to Veggies to make a tray of rosemary/garlic crackers. I added oregano to my basic flax cracker tray. I prepped all the ingredients the night before. I get a lot of “it looks like too much work” and “where do you find the time?” from friends. I am a planner and a multi-tasker so I can get a lot done in one fell swoop. Really if you’re committed to doing something, you will find away.

Success on both accounts. I love the rosemary and garlic mix. Such great flavours!! You don’t have to add anything to the cracker. I ate four straight out of the dehydrator! The flax cracker turned out fine too I would spread some homemade peanut butter or something on the flax crackers and top with sprouts.

Enough to share! (I know my coworkers can’t wait to sample more crackers!) Not sure what I am going to whip up next. January is my busy, busy month. I hope to try at least one new dish each month.
Remind me, okay?

  1. Those crackers look yummy! I'm interested to learn more about how you enjoy the raw veggie life. I do wonder sometimes if cooking my greens cooks out all the nutrients!

  2. Remind me to visit you if I ever go to Calgary because those look yum! I always flirt with the idea of veg/raw but I can never commit because I love meat way too much but I've been working on incorporating more into my life.
