Grotto Canyon: Looking ridiculous and loving it

Let’s be real here. I looked completely ridiculous wearing my complete winter running pack through Grotto Canyon. I had just finished Anklebiter Ridge and decided to tack on Grotto Canyon trail for more time on feet.

The Grotto Canyon trail is a 7-kilometre out and back that’s wildly popular spot for families and tourists. At this time of year, the creek is frozen so there’s an opportunity to walk on water. In the summer, you can follow the path along the creek.

I would argue the winter is the best time to visit because of the frozen waterfalls, which add a little magical drama.

Highlights include frozen waterfalls, a cave and ancient rock walls. If you love natural features like that, it’s a fun wander. Understandably, the trail was bursting with people. Most wore spikes. I sorted jogged when it was appropriate. Mostly, I just felt ridiculous.

The cave sits a the top of a sandy climb. I watched a few people try and fail to scramble to the cave. Then three young teenagers took a run at it. One made it up very quickly while the other two got stuck halfway.

Grotto Canyon trail is a easy going laid back trail for when you want to soak in the atmosphere. The only difficulty is navigating the crowds.

I jogged out of the canyon feeling inspired and good. Anklebiter tapped into my mental sharpness and grit while Grotto Canyon settled my mind and helped close out my mountain adventure on a positive note. It was the kind mountain day that leaves you tired, inspired and ready for what comes next.

  1. What a beautifully written reflection on a day in the mountains! I loved how you balanced humor and humility with genuine appreciation for the trail — especially the way you embraced looking “ridiculous” in your winter running gear while still soaking in the magic of Grotto Canyon: Looking Ridiculous and Loving It. Your description of the frozen waterfalls and the lively trail atmosphere really brought the experience to life. It’s inspiring to see how you weave together physical challenge, awe‑inspiring scenery, and that joyful sense of accomplishment at the end of a great run. Thanks for sharing this moment — it makes me want to lace up and explore the canyon myself!
