Let there be running

My cold has finally taken a step back. All week I have been hearing the call of the run and I finally was able to answer the call. I planned to run between 5K and 8K before I work on Tuesday afternoon.
I didn’t want to overdo it because I am just getting over my cold. I had slept in a little later than I wanted so I really only had about an hour to run. I was itching to get outside.

I decided to run my usual 4K out and back route from my apartment. It was simple and mindless. I didn’t want to have to calculate distance. The first 3K is pretty flat so I like to fly down the sidewalks. It wasn’t my smartest move because I was gasping for air for the first 10 minutes.

After the first bit on the road, it’s down into the wooded trail. I love this trail. It’s short but it is well-connected to other areas of the trail system. I like to do hill repeats on this one winding hill. Earlier this year Selma and I ran into a moose on the trail.
At the 4K turn around mark is this lovely pond. I’ve taken many pictures here this year. There’s also a strategically placed outhouse. I know I can count on it when I need to go. Unlike the one near Discovery Canyon, this one is always open.

Feeling pretty good, I turned around for the climb back to the road. I saw a couple people on the trails with their dogs. That was nice to see. It was such a gorgeous winter day. Anyway … I ran home feeling awesome. That first run after a layoff can be amazing. It renewed my love of running. I can’t wait to resume my training for my next ultra!

  1. Snazzy shoes! So glad you could get out for such a nice wintery run! Me, nope. No running today, tomorrow, yesterday or any of the days before that. Maybe one of these days I’ll stop hurting myself and be able to run again! Ha. 🙂

  2. Cute shoes and great show photos! I haven't run outside in iowa for a while. I think I will tomorrow. I too am itching to get outside again.
