The Cold That Shagged Me

I’ve been caught by the seasonal winter cold. It has gripped hold of every inch of my body at one of the worst possible times.

In my world as a municipal affairs reporter, the busy time is generally when council debates its multi-million dollar budget for the next year. It started this week and could last up to 10 days.  I have to be especially spot on with my reporting.

But when you’re dealing with a runny nose, a headache and dry eyes, it’s not that simple. Yes I could stay home but I am dedicated and I don’t want to miss any of “the action.” (Plus it’s always fun to hear my coworkers bellow “Stay away from me. I don’t want to get sick.) So I have been going to work and immediately to bed after I filed my copy.

I haven’t run or WODed all week. I have done zero exercise since Sunday. Zip. I feel awful in every sense but I know the best thing is to rest and to take in copious amounts of fluids. Despite my best efforts I am not getting any better.

Erin, a follow reporter, suggested a homemade remedy to ward off a sore throat. It consists of hot water, lemon, honey and apple cider vinegar. It worked wonders but it did nothing for my headache, dry eyes and runny nose.

I broke down on Thursday and headed to the drugstore. I bought a few different types of drugs. I took a handful and I am likely high as I write this post. If anything, I will sleep well tonight.

Have you had a cold or the flu this season?

Do you take home remedies or store-bought drugs?

  1. It's definitely the time of year for that. I hate taking cold medicine because it makes me super loopy so I usually just struggle through my cold. Get better fast!

  2. honey and cinnamon – Chai Tea is my goto remedy for any ailments and is my finish line reward.

  3. LOL – love that you said you're likely high as you write this. Too funny.

I'm an all natural kind of gal. For sinus, I try a net-pot first, with a drop of eucalyptus oil added to it. I also ramp up garlic and lemon intake. I've been known to juice a lemon, add a diced up garlic clove and a pinch of salt and drink it straight. Suppose to be a natural antibiotic.

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar in 3/4 cup warm water and chug – suppose to kill mucous production.

    I use essential oils non-stop.

Lots of fresh juices and homemade chicken soup.

and my new favourite thing – Emercen-C. It's a drink powder, not all natural but I swear it helped knock out my last cold.

    Good luck feeling better.

    1. Thanks Bex! I am writing these down right now. I love apple cider vinegar. It is definitely a cure all! It does kill the mucous. I tried it with some lemon and a tad bit of honey. Worked wonders!
