Dry Run Diaries: Kronenbourg Blanc 1644

I went down a long and winding rabbit hole researching the origins of France’s Kronenbourg Blanc 1644. My non-alcoholic beer reviews to date were brewed in Canada so I wanted some history lesson while I sampled this golden pale lager.

Lots of details so I will keep it to fun facts because I know you probably didn’t come here for a history lesson.

Kronenbourg Brewery, founded in 1664 in Strasbourg, France, is one of the oldest beer breweries in the world. In 1850, the brewery relocated to higher ground because of frequent flooding to Cronenbourg, an area of Strasbourg. Two years later, the famous Kronenbourg 1664 (lager) was crafted in 1952.

Today it is France’s leading premium lager. After a few name changes, mergers acquisitions and expansions, the company is now owned by the Danish multinational Carlsberg.

Kronenbourg Blanc 1664 is a variation of the classic lager, known for its fruity character. The brewmasters wanted to create something different than anything in the market at the time. The result is a “wheat beer with heritage” that is often served with a slice of lemon to enhance its citrus notes.

My Review – Kronenbourg Blanc1664 (330 ml, 100 calories, 0.0% ABV)

Name Bling (name creativity) – I love the declaration that Kronenbourg Blanc 1644 is the only beer in the world named after after a date. Simple and memorable. Besides history is cool. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sip n’ Savour (Taste) – This wheat beer comes with a side of coriander, orange peel and a note of citrus. I generally do not like any citrus in my beer. Usually I can handle a faint taste but there was something that did not sit right with me. Almost too sweet. The brew team boasts the citrus twist brings a “little ooh-la-la” to the everyday, according to its website. (Now that’s marketing!) ⭐⭐

Wallet Wellness Index (Value for Money) – This was a fair price. Six bottles – $10.99 ⭐⭐⭐

Label Love (Packaging/ Presentation) – I’m getting a retro vibe with the beer carrier box. Where most craft brews are going with the minimalist, splashy look, this one stays close to its classy French roots. I love the blue bottles and “mieux partagée avec des amis” and “best shared with friends” phrase on its white and blue box. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall – The blanc just didn’t hit the mark for me. Not every beer will suit everyone’s tastebuds. I encourage you to try this one if you are looking for something a light with a splash of citrus. Maybe grab a lemon slice too.

Where to buy: I bought this six-pack at the Co-op. Find it in most grocery or liquor stores or online.
