Grynd

Review: Grynd endurance butter

I scored two full-size pouches of Grynd endurance butter at Gord’s Frozen Ass Fifty in February. Since I ditched fancy and pricy nutrition buys, I jumped at the chance to try something new-to-me on the market. Besides who doesn’t love free stuff?

I stashed a pouch in my hydration pack before a recent run on Moose Mountain Road. I had not packed my kit the night before so this was the perfect opportunity to try this new fuel.

Based somewhere in B.C., Grynd’s endurance butter comes in two sizes: snack size (32 grams) and full size (125 grams.) It’s a blend of peanut butter with chocolate and honey, available in two flavours: peanut butter and peanut butter and chocolate.

The company prides itself on offering all-natural tailored for athletes.

I had the full size, which packs a whopping 180 calories per serving (32 grams) or 720 calories for this full size (125 grams) pouch. I thought if i I liked this it would be really great for one of my long days in the mountains.

Unlike the usual gel packs, the full-size Grynd pouch sports a small white screw-off top. Writing on the packet says ‘knead for speed.’ The company says “to knead the package between your fingers to soften, open, squeeze and enjoy.” On cold days, they recommend keeping the pouch close to your body to soften the pouch.

That day on Moose Mountain Road was relatively warm for March – meaning I could remove my gloves without getting frost bite. I kneaded the pouch but a bit before I screwed off the lid. Extracting the fuel was slow moving. What I could get out of the pouch was super tasty – tasted just like peanut butter.

My only gripe was the difficulty of getting the fuel out of the pouch. Maybe I didn’t knead it enough? It really shouldn’t be that much work. I may just cut the pouch’s top off for better access on another day.

I can’t give a solid review on Grynd endurance butter but I want to because it’s so tasty. I will give it another go because apparently it has a year shelf life stored at room temperature. I may order some of the smaller sizes with the convenient tear-off next time.

Stay tuned for an updated review once I give it another shot.
