RWR Picks # 4: The Moth, Carpool Karaoke, Son of a Trickster

Winter is back in Calgary. We had a good run of decent weather with unseasonable temperatures and little snow. It was fun while it lasted. Time to embrace winter in all its glory and stay warm.

Let’s do this!

PLAY THAT PODCAST

I have been a long-time listener of The Moth Radio Hour, when “true stories are told live” in front of an audience. I swear this has got to be one of the best podcasts EVER. If you love storytelling, you will love this podcast.

These personal and often powerful stories will make you laugh, cry or even shake your head. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of people and share your story. This podcast will leave you feeling at the very least inspired.

I love a good laugh. Sometimes I love a good cry. Mostly I like to play the music loud and sing in my car. Late night talk show host James Corden made a thing out of it – singing in the car or rather Carpool Karaoke. I’m in bed early so I never watch his show.

So I am thrilled that all the car singing videos are posted on his channel. He has a Carpool Karaoke playlist so you can easily find the videos. Some of my favourite guests have included Paul McCartney, Adele and Lady Gaga.

READ THIS BOOK

Son of A Trickster by Eden Robinson was a shortlisted for the 2017 Scotia Bank Giller Prize. The book is the first in a trilogy, which happened to take 10 years to write. I didn’t know the book was a trilogy when I picked it up at the library. Otherwise I might have put it back on the shelf.

The thing is with trilogies … you have to wait and often wait some more for the next book in the series. Sometimes it’s so long that you have to read the first or second book again.

The story follows Jared who is a teenager who makes pot brownies with a messed up family life. Doesn’t seem out of the ordinary until you read more to learn there’s something magical going on. Some members of the family have super powers or such. It’s a little out of no where but the book was hard to put down. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series, Trickster Drift.

FINAL WORDS

Please let me know in the comments below if you like this new series. As well I would love to hear what you’re reading or what you are listening to. Have a wonderful week.
