Ever try wheat grass juice? It’s pretty gross, right? It has a distinct taste that you either love or can barely stomach. It’s pretty intense.
A few weeks ago I was in a local shop where I spotted some wheat berry sprouting seeds. You can usually buy a wheatgrass shot at a juice bar or buy an expensive bottle at the health store. BecauseΒ I am all about DIY and making my own stuff, I decided to give wheatgrass juice a go.

Packed with chlorophyll, wheat grass juice is said to be super healthy. Some experts, however, dispute this claim for a variety of reaons. I am not sold either way. I reckon it’s green so it can’t be that bad for me. There are a lot worse things to put in our bodies.
Getting down to business, I covered the bottom of one sprouting tray with seeds. Like my other sprouts, I watered the seeds twice a day. It really is handy to have a three-tray sprouter. Mason jars work great but there’s more steps. I like to be efficient.
Within a couple days, the wheatgrass was growing like a weed. (No pun intended.) When the lid popped off the top, I knew it was time to harvest the grass.

Using scissors, I cut the grass down and shoved it into my Vitamix (sorry no picture). I added a couple ice cubes and a cup of water. I blended on high for about one minute. I used a piece of cheese cloth to strain the guck from the juice. I poured the juice over the cloth. I think a mason jar or something to secure the cloth would have worked better.
Look at the glorious green? One tray = 1 cup of wheatgrass juice. I took a quick shot of the juice β yup, still gross. I think I will stick to vodka shots.

I poured the juice into an ice cube tray to freeze. A few hours later, the cubes were ready to pop into a smoothie. Because of all the other stuff in my smoothie, I didn’t detect the wheatgrass. That’s a win-win.
