I haven’t run the Cactus Coulee Crawl for a few years now. I added to my list this year because the timing of the race is perfect for my training. While the Lethbridge race is in early June, it is often one of the first hot weekends of the season.
Because of its early date, the Cactus Coulee Crawl is a perfect fitness check in or reality check.
I went into the race knowing full well that I wouldn’t be setting any new personal bests. That’s the beauty of this race. Treat it like a long run with friends and no one is disappointed.
I left Calgary fairly early because I wanted to take my time and enjoy the drive. I don’t venture south of Calgary very often so it’s nice to take in the views. I stopped at a gas station to fill up before grabbing a coffee at Tim Hortons. I arrived early to secure a great parking spot and chat with some running pals.

The race
I seeded myself at the back of the pack so I wouldn’t get trampled. My plan was to hold an easy pace and stay loose and relaxed. It was surprisingly a chilly start to the race. I even wore gloves because my hands always get too cold. Of course I over dressed, and I planned to strip down at the first aid station.
The five aid stations were between five and six kilometres a part. I had filled my bladder with tail wind, which turned out to be a rookie mistake. I was feeling pretty good throughout the race until about the last six or so kilometres. Then my stomach turned. I didn’t feel well at all. I had to slow down and walk quite a bit. I was sad because I was enjoying my time chatting with a Lethbridge runner, who I hadn’t seen in some time.
That’s also one of the best parts about this small race – community. Just like Lost Soul in September, this race is run by a fantastic team of volunteers. Of course there’s also all the familiar faces from the trail running community.
How do I feel about the race?
Stomach issues aside, I felt pretty good about my race/long run. My legs did not let me down. I kept a steady moving pace.
I haven’t been around the running community for more than a year now. Felt good to be back in the thick of it again.
