Do yourself a favour, go offline but keep running

I haven’t blogged much lately because I been living my life mostly offline. Sometimes it’s good to take a break from all the screens. Of course I wasn’t completely offline because I handle the web and stuff for work.

But I took a step back from endless scrolling and mindless reading. I did an audit on my iPhone and removed about 10 apps including Facebook. Speaking of Facebook, I hate it but like a good train wreck, I can’t look away. I’m still spending time there – only on my RWR page – but significant. I’ve been deleting Facebook posts. And it feels really good – freeing almost.

Reducing the time I spend online felt incredibly good for my brain. I felt like my mind was getting foggier every day. Get this. I ran but I did not put my runs on social media. So I ask you, did they really happen?

Anyway enough with my weird anti-social media behaviour. Let’s talk running.

My only news is that I am cutting back on driving to the mountains every weekend to run or hike. Not only do I want to avoid battling the icy/snowy roads that come with winter, I want to give my Qashqai a break. Besides I drive enough back and forth to work all week. I want to do my part – however small – in reducing emissions.

After work on Fridays, I park my car. Then I don’t touch it again until Monday morning. I can walk or take transit where ever I need to go. It feels good to take my car off the road even if it is only for two days. The only downside is that my options for running are limited.

Going offline

But I haven’t been running too much that it has been a problem. Running along the Bow River pathway is still new to me. I also have options to explore the surrounding neighbourhoods. Lots of options.

ddI haven’t sorted out my race calendar for 2020 yet. However I signed up for the Powderface Marathon in July. Next year I will likely stay close to home because I cannot afford all the races especially if they are out of Calgary. Entries are so expensive. Add on hotel rooms and the actual price of the race keeps climbing. So I am going to take my time in deciding which races I am doing.

I want to challenge myself with new races and distances. There’s so much choice out there today. I would love to run more races in B.C. but again it’s gets pricey when you throw in a different postal code. That being said, I’m excited about trying new in 2020.

Have you filled out your 2020 calendar? Do you ever take a time out from social media? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
