Why Canada is Awesome (how I spent Canada Day)

A Canadian flag and a mountain. Need I say more? OK I will. Allie and I headed to West Bragg Creek to climb Moose Mountain on Canada Day.

Over the last few years, I have made it my own tradition to run/hike a mountain on July 1. There’s nothing I like more than feeling the mountain breeze on my face while I think about all the reasons I am thankful to live in such a welcoming and inclusive country. (Yes we do have a long way to go in some areas (i.e. truth and reconciliation etc) but we are leading the charge on the global scale in so many areas.)

Canada continues to amaze me with its diverse landscapes of deserts, mountains, lakes and oceans. My recent trip to Yellowknife only replenished my heart with continued love for our country.

So on Sunday, I thought – let’s ask everyone we pass to pose for a picture with our Canadian flag. We were prepared for some crazy looks and some straight out “nos” but we knew most people would love to be part of our flag project.

One of the first photos of the day. I think this is my favourite.
Our first photo of strangers. This family was from West Bragg Creek, and it was their first time up Moose. Now that I look at the pictures, I think we should have jumped in with all our models. Next time.
I wasn’t sure if this lady from Calgary would be on board. You never know when you approach a stranger with promises to make them famous on your blog etc. She was definitely excited to be included.
Allie took everything in good strides when I told her the plan for the day. She was an expert photographer by the end of the day. Canada Day magic, baby.
This man came running up to us asking if they could borrow the flag to take a photo. We said “absolutely” because we want to take your picture. You just have to feed us. (They offered food but we politely declined.)
We cross paths with two runners among all the hikers. Funning, the tall guy and I follow each other on Strava. The other guy said Strava was creepy. Well there’s that.
These two were on their way down while we climbed the final metres to the top. The guy had a fixed camera, which I used to take a photo for them. I nearly fell backwards down the mountain because I couldn’t zoom out.
It was so windy at the fire tower. The little girl loved having her photo taken. That’s her mom and their dog. The little girl was giving everyone stamps, which was super cute.
I can’t remember much about this trio except the daughter asked if we knew some high school student at Lindsay Thurber. Red Deer is small enough so it wouldn’t be a stretch.
This group was a little unsure of what we were doing. Two other groups passed us while we were taking photos. (We’re not crazy … just happy.) Look at the puppy!
These ladies were having a grand old time. Happy to give them this memory as we took photos with their cameras and phones too. Who doesn’t love having their photos taken with a Canadian flag?
And there you have it. Hope you had a wonderful Canada Day!
