Tony: I am a Runner

Let me introduce you to Tony from Calgary. I bumped into Tony a few times with the Calgary Trail Runners and at the odd race. He’s seems to a solid runner who will be chasing some great goals in 2015.
But I am a little bit worried about Tony. Check out his answer to question #3. Come on, Tony. You must have SOMETHING to share.

Name:
Tony Gordon
Age: 50
City: Calgary
Runner Since: 2013

1. Why did you start running? What pushes you to keep going?
A friend asked me to take her spot in a Spartan race, which introduced me to a few runners, who then asked me to join them with a Saturday morning running group, that led to increased distance and in invite to run with a Sinister 7 group. Of course, that meant training, which led me to the Calgary Trail Runners. I don’t need much pushing to keep going most of the time, but having a group to run with helps on those days you’re just not quite “up to it.”
2. What is your running/fitness routine for a typical week?
I typically only run 3 days a week, Tuesday and Thursday nights, and a weekend longer run, and I’ll add some gym time and maybe some shinny (Hockey) if I have time.

3. Best running memory? Tell us about it. I got nothing.
4. What is your dream race? Tell us about it.
So far, my favourite race is Sinister 7, but I’m starting to look at off continent ultras, destination races to blend vacations with running, Australia might be my first stop. (Although I do have two in California coming up.)

5. Do you run alone or are you part of a running group?
I run with the CTR, but will run alone when I’m just looking to put in a few kilometres close to home.
6. What’s your biggest running accomplishment?
So far my biggest accomplishment was completing my first ultra, the Grizzly back in October. My first big accomplishment was running Leg 5 of Sinister 7. (This year) I’m doing Legs 4 and 5 to push myself a bit farther.

7. How has running made a difference in your life?

My liver thanks me. I have met some great people through running. I suspect it’s the type of person that runs, but my circle of friends has become enriched by a very supportive and encouraging group. (Who I blame for most of the crazy runs/races I get sucked into.)
8. Did you ever experience a runner’s high or an “ah ha” moment?
Haven’t hit that “wall” but I truly feel complete when I’m finished a run.
9. What are your favourite running gadgets?
My Garmin Forerunner 10, a basic watch that tells distance and elevation.

10. What are your running goals for 2015?
I’m looking to run four ultras this year, plus a bunch of half marathon distances, and 90% on a trail somewhere. I’m already signed up for Blackfoot, Sinister 7, Fat Dog, and Grizzly, two Tough Mudders (Cross training…) We’ll see what else comes up throughout the year. I’ll try to run between 200K and 300K per month, and NOT get hurt along the way.
