Scenes & thoughts from my 25K long run

Let’s play catch up. Since Friday I have run once – today. I had to work yesterday and I had plans directly after work so I didn’t have time to squeeze in a short run. I was cool with that because I had 25k of fun on tap today.
I was still debating whether or not to drive to the mountains on Saturday night. In all it would be four hours of driving time plus any running time. Normally I would have gone for it but I to do a zillion errands before work tomorrow.
I didn’t want to run on the road so I ran the only place I know with dirt – Riverbend. The usual loop I do is 12k so I planned to run it twice and make up the difference along the way. It was a brisk fall day when I started. I could have used gloves because my hands were cold. I wore my shorts and a light jacket. It was quite refreshing.
I didn’t see many people out (save for a few couples walking hand in hand and a few dog walkers.) That was fine with me. I wanted to be alone with my thoughts. It’s been awhile since I truly ran a long slow distance. I filled up my iPod with the most recent Trail Runner Nation podcasts. I had so many to get caught up with! I felt so behind.
I was excited to run long. Like I said it’s been awhile since I have run alone and for a longer distance. I was able to focus and to get my mind right on a few things that have been bothering me lately. I find being in nature always puts a positive spin on things. My body and mind were into it for the most part. My right foot/Achilles started giving me grief after about 10K. I knew this was coming but I didn’t let it ruin my run. I just kept on and if I needed to I would stop and stretch out my leg/hip.
This run wasn’t about speed. It was about spending time on my feet and listening to my body. I ran a solid 10K on Friday. It was a few minutes slower than I would have liked but it felt good to hit fast on the speed dial.
After my run I walked down to the river and took off my shoes. I dipped them in the water as I marvelled at the beauty around me. It was so calm and quiet. I loved it. I wore my Saucony as opposed to those damn Salomon. Never again! My feet felt right.
I walked around in my barefeet for awhile after I enjoyed a tasty apple. I don’t know what it is but I love eating crisp apples after/during my runs. Is that weird? I am so glad to have gotten away from those darn gels. All I need is my Tailwind on my long runs and I am good to go (as long as I remember to take it).
And that was my Sunday run.
