Marathon Monday: Calgary Marathon (Week 15 Training Recap)

My second week of training or Week 15 will go down in the history books as “ugh.” It was like a switch turned off in my mind/bosy. I was down for the count for most of the week. I was tired. I was grouchy. I just wanted to hide under the covers in my bed. 
I blame Mother Nature. I’m not a new Canadian. I get winter. I get Canadian winters. But this winter has completely zapped my energy levels. Last week, I felt great. This week not so much. I hurt. An old reoccurring injury (right foot) showed its ugly face early in the week. I must have pushed too hard at spin or something.

I skipped my long run because I simply did not want to run in -27C. There I said it. I just didn’t want to run.

A glimpse of my week:

Monday: 11K Tempo Run
Tuesday: Spin/Bike class
Wednesday: Crossfit
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Crossfit & 4×800 intervals (outside)
Saturday: 12K easy run
Sunday: Rest

Don’t count me out,  I am not throwing in the towel. I just had one of those weeks that was based on low motivation. I know that the upside of a poor training week is having it early enough in the training game. You know what I mean, right? We all have those bad weeks.

I have no doubt Week 14 will rock. 

I am committed to running my best marathon in Calgary on June 1. My head is in the game. Among other training books, I’ve been reading and taking notes from the New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition by Matt Fitzgerald. I will share with you when I am finished reading. This book is a gold mine of solid scientific research and proven real-world examples. Pick it up!

    I've also been exhausted this week and after my long run yesterday afternoon I slept all day on the couch with Lola, lol. I think all Canadians are ready for this Winter to take a hike!

    1. I am learning so much! So many great books out there. Now I have to put down the book & put it into action đŸ™‚

  2. Definitely one of the best books out there. I also recommend racing weight by the same author for more good stuff!

  3. I think in all training we are bound to come across moments like these. You said it right…your head is in it, and that's what matters! Your body just decided it needed a bit more rest, it got it, you acknowledged it, now you are ready to kill it!

  5. Week 15 was meh for me, but as I got it done I thought oooh week 14 will be BETTER. And then I have been in BED since Friday evening. (super sad face) You are doing AWESOME!! Keep it up!!
    I hope to get out Thursday for a super easy run. This weather sure isnt making it easy is it??

  6. It sounds like this winter is starting to get to a few of us. It wouldn't be so bad if if wasn't alway so cold like it is this year. Here's to a better week for many of us.

  7. Everyone has those weeks. It is what it is. Good for you for moving forward and for the record I think you are totally going to rock Calgary Marathon. I can't wait to be there and meet everyone!!!
