Marathon Monday: Calgary Marathon (Week 16 Training Recap)

My first week of training is in the books. I’ve been yakking about my marathon training for so long that it feels great to finally quit talking & get to down to business.

I feel pretty good. I ate solid meals and slept pretty well most nights. I didn’t hit my targeted paces every single time and I’m cool with that. My core area/chest is a little sore from all the ab mat sit ups. When I swam on Sunday, I could really feel my core. I hope that’s a good thing! (Is it possible to break your abs?)

Here’s a glimpse:

Monday: Crossfit (10 min AMRAP of 15 thrusters + 12 burpees with 75 ab mat cash out) *Rest day

Tuesday: 9K Tempo

Wednesday: Morning: Crossfit (6 RFT of 10 OHS + 10 Chest 2 Bar Pull Ups) Evening: Bike 40 minutes

Thursday: Track (3×1600 @ 7:11 per mile)

Friday: Crossfit (75 ab mat buy in. WOD: 15 minute running clock: 40-30-20-10-5 wall balls + DUS. 75 ab mat cash out.)

Saturday: 21 km

Sunday: 40 minute cycling + 500 metre swim

* I am counting “my crossfit only” days as a rest day. No doubt I will be taking full rest days when my training kicks into a higher grear.

Coming Up:

I’m on afternoon shifts all week which means morning workouts. The trick will be to balance crossfit and my runs. On Tuesday I am taking a spin-like class at my crossfit gym. I’m super excited about this! I’m also hoping to swim at least once this week again. I’ll get my tempo run in today and my track work either Wednesday or Thursday.

What’s your week in training look like? Do your abs ever “hurt’?

  1. Best of luck Crystal. Looks like a good week of training. My body is not cut out 3x weekly running. I do much better running 6 or 7 days a week. I'm also in the middle of something called Maximum Strength, which is a strength trianing program by Eric Cressey so yes, my abs hurt (the good kind) at least once a week! 🙂

  2. I'm going to do yoga, TRX, & Bosu for cross training this week. I wish I could get into swimming for cross training.

    1. I have to try yoga. Swimming is nice & relaxing too. I only wish I had the time to swim more.

  3. I so admire that you run and do CrossFit together. I suspect I'd be way too sore to train for a race! I love it when my abs hurt. Good pain! Fun to watch everyone fire up training for June marathons.

  4. Looks like a great first week of training! All of that strength work is really going pay off later 🙂

  5. Congrats on your first week!! All down hill form here, right? 🙂

  6. Congrats on completing your first week of training 🙂 I'll be training along with you….but for the Half 🙂 I have a plan for 3 Key Workouts to try one race….but for now I'm cranking out 5 days a week, with a bit of cross-training. I look forward to following your journey!
