Baby it's cold outside

Okay, Mother Nature. Enough. The weather outside is not delightful. It’s bloody cold. I’m not new to winter but the frigid temperatures surprise me every year. Sometimes when it’s crap weather like this, I take my workouts inside. I am usually pretty good with getting in my runs. But this week I have been battling with an old foot injury so I decided to take it easy. I didn’t want to worry about slipping on ice & hurting my foot even more. (Besides next week I start my focused training.)

WEDNESDAY

I woke up to -41C. How is this fair? It hasn’t snowed in a few days so that’s the one good thing. I can suffer the cold but I am not a fan of the big snow because it brings treacherous conditions for driving and running. The ice doesn’t make for nice running either but at least I can see my feet.

Brent and I headed to the multiplex for some speed work. Neither one of us wanted to brave the cold. This was my first time to the multiplex. A friend mentioned it was great for intervals. The Collicutt Centre in Red Deer has an indoor track but it is always busy. I went there once and I was so frustrated with the foot traffic that I left in a huff.
Well isn’t this convenient – a bar beside the track. Oh no. This could only mean bad things! Brent was overjoyed. The place is awesome! It’s only a 200-metre track but it’s above a hockey rink. I loved that it was so cool. The patrons at the bar have a front row seat to the track. I didn’t realize this until our post-run drinks. Funny. I’ll make sure to run stronger when I pass that section of windows next week!
After a 15-minute warm up we went our track ways. I ran 8x400m intervals. My Garmin failed to catch the signal so I didn’t pay much attention to my times. I was breathing heavy after the intervals so that means I was working hard right?

THURSDAY

I had physio at noon for my neck. A few months ago, I was in a minor car accident and I hurt my neck. It’s all good now. I asked my PT to look at my foot. She said the culprit is likely tight calves and the added stress from re-introducing Olympic lifting back into my routine. She advised me to stretch my calves and to do heel stretches.

It’s my day off so I had time to substitute cycling and swimming for my run. I reckoned this was better for my foot than pounding on the snowy & icy trails. I felt great! I finally remembered to wear my Garmin 910xt in the pool. That was pretty cool. Swimming was so refreshing. I need to swim laps more often.

I finished reading a book and I made a tasty tofu stirfry for lunch. Oh so good! I don’t generally like working weekends but it’s nice to have a day off during the week. I get so much done! Love it. Anyway I am feeling pretty good heading into my focused marathon training. I’m super busy with life but I know I can make my goals happen if I keep my eye on the prize!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you have an awesome day!

  1. Wow, that arena sounds so cool (especially the bar area!!) I wish we had a place like that around us to utilize in the winter! Also, that tofu stir fry looks amazing! Have a great weekend, even if you do have to work!! πŸ™‚

  2. I'm ready for this weather to be over and done with too. It's almost spring right? πŸ˜‰

  3. Even though I've been in Calgary for 11 years, if it's colder than -15 I'm running inside! Thankfully I have treadmills in my condo that I can use πŸ™‚

  4. I am ready for winter to be over too! Mostly because I want to hit the trails with my jogging stroller πŸ™‚ If you are planning a trip to Edmonton any time soon we should go for a run!!

  5. I'm pretty jealous of your indoor track. The few that I've been able to find around here are too small so it's soooooo boring. You have to do like 15 rounds just to get to a mile. Needless to say, it's been a while since I've used one. Now I just jump on the treadmill instead if I have to run indoors.
