Sleepless in Red Deer & Random Ramblings

I’ve had a busy week balancing work, life in general & my training. There hasn’t been much time left over to blog about it all. I will tell you that I have getting some runs in and eating well. Once again though, I’ve had trouble sleeping. (Big sigh) I find it very challenging to turn off my brain and relax after a stressful day.

In fact I gave up trying to sleep hours ago. I am writing this post at 2 a.m. I tired to sleep but I kept tossing, turning and fretting over work. I decided I might as well get up and do something productive. So here I sit.

Any tips for turning off your brain at night? Any type of advice. (Note: Warm milk does not do it for me!)

In unrelated news ….

A few days ago I mentioned I bought a new white board and put it up near my kitchen. I’m loving it. I jotted down some motivational quotes & gave myself a January challenge.

Every day this month, I will do:

  • 50 squats
  • 50 lunges (25 each leg)
  • 2-minute plank
So far, so good. I haven’t missed a day. Lunges suck. Mostly they suck because I am unsteady on my feet. But you know what? I can already see an improvement and it’s only been 11 days. I am lunging faster and my butt is not burning the next day.
In February, I will switch it up a bit with a new challenge. I think it’s important to keep it interesting. Last spring, I was doing a burpee challenge and I nearly lost my mind. Burpees suck as a general rule and I nearly died of repetitive boredom. How are you challenging yourself this month?

Before I try to sleep again I wanted to share with you a quote that I read the other day:

YOU BODY CAN STAND ALMOST ANYTHING. IT’S YOUR MIND YOU HAVE TO CONVINCE.

Sweet dreams.

  1. I drink chamomile tea every night before bed and it combats my restless legs. I sleep like a rock.

I also sometimes use the Sandman capsules from Athletic Alliance (available at GNC) that help you repair after hard workouts and get in a deeper sleep. They contain melatonin which is a wonderful supplement on it's own to help sleep.

  2. I find a hot bath and turning off the computer and TV 1 hour before heading to bed helps me sleep. Reading something boring helps too … do you have any technical manuals lying around? 🙂
