Hand over that sandbag, I have some hills to run

Participating in the Super Spartan has been on my mind lately. There’s been a lot of talk around the gym about carrying fuel, the running bit and what to wear. I’m starting to get nervous about the obstacles again. I’m not worried about the running part but I should be. Likely I will be exhausted from doing all those burpees! The last thing I will want to do is run some more.

I know it’s way too late to work on my strength but it doesn’t hurt to put more work in. I borrowed an “inner tube sandbag” from my colleague Jeff (above) today. My plan was to run up and down some hills while carrying the sandbag slung over my shoulders. I’ve heard this is great overall for the whole body. Besides you look badass doing it.

The “sandbag” weighs 40 pounds. Nice touch with the handles. Made it a lot easier to hold onto. Tracy was unable to make it so I was on my own at Riverbend. I just hoped I didn’t bump into anyone I knew.

I ran the 5K loop across the road before I hurled the sandbag over my shoulders. Jeff told me to keep my core strong so I wouldn’t hurt my back. (Our boss John told Jeff he would be held responsible if I called in sick because I had thrown out my back) As luck would have it I did bump into someone I knew and some other runners. I felt like a moron. But I think they were impressed.
As it was my first go with the sandbag, I took my time getting used to the sandbag. Heavy stuff. I alternated between two shoulders and one shoulder. I didn’t even attempt to run the hills. It was easy up and easy down. I concentrated on maintaining a tight core and engaging my muscles. Felt good for the first time out. I’m interested in trying out other exercises with the sandbag. I wonder if I can convince Jeff to make one of my own.
Have you done any sandbag training? Tips?
