Hate may be a bit harsh for someone I have never met. Maybe annoy is the better verb to use.
Who is Martin Slofstra? you ask. He’s a “writer and editor in Brampton, Ont.” who writes a column in the Wednesday Globe and Mail “chronicling his job search” in the career section.
He’s been out of work for about five months. Obviously the Globe editors think that his job hunting adventures are newsworthy and are of interest to those in the same boat. Perhaps they think it will give us encouragement or a needed break from our own dismal searches.
I can’t speak for anyone else but his column annoys the hell out of me. When I first started searching for employment, his words agitated me. A month later, his profile picture makes me down right angry. I want to write him a short email. Two words only with a question mark. Simple. Who cares?
I have no reasonable explanation for any of this. Today’s headline pushed me over the edge. “Finally, my first real job offer – sort of” Good for you Martin, buddy.
This week he rambles on and on about how different, unique and intriguing this part-time job could be. He gives a boring account of this unique opportunity and how he learned about the position. Blah blah blah. I just don’t care.
I read the career section to check postings and stay informed. I do not read it to learn about how the job hunt is going for a man who has over 20 years more working experience than I do.
Besides how unemployed are you really when you write for Canada’s National newspaper?
