Healing on the trail: Hiking Old Goat Glacier and Opal Ridge

I have turned a corner in my healing process. I am feeling well enough to hike at a moderate pace. I am so happy to get back into the mountains. Just three months ago I tore my glute muscle but it feels much longer.

I am slowly introducing running back into my routine. I’ve been walking every single day and putting in the necessary rehab exercises. I feel confident that I will be back in running shape in the next month.

I recently hiked Old Goat Glacier trail with a new running friend who I met volunteering at Iron legs. The Old Goat Glacier has been on my list since I saw photos of it early in the year. It’s a short one – 8 kilometres with less than 700 metre elevation gain.

It’s a long drive (1.5 hours) for a short hike this but I was just happy to finally do this one. Next time I would pair it with Ha Ling or another peak along the Spray Lake Road.

Old Goat Glacier is one of the smaller remnant glaciers in the region, but it features some fascinating glacial landscapes, including moraines and fossils. While we didn’t spot any fossils, it was amazing to witness such powerful geological history up close.

I recently hiked Opal Ridge with some running friends. I was thankful that they were fine with hiking at my pace. This was extra fun since none of them have done this ridge before. I always love sharing my favourite mountain spots.

Time really flies and I can’t believe it’s nearly October. While this summer did not turn out the way I wanted, I am determined to make the best of the final three months of 2025.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
