Saskatchewan

Scenic route for one: southwestern Saskatchewan

I pulled over at one of those roadside pullouts while driving east on the Trans Canada Highway towards Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. I couldn’t resist stopping to soak in the views.

It was those types of views that make all the driving worth it. Picture lush green and yellow canola fields stretching all the way to the Prairie horizon. I am an ocean/mountain girl at heart but Canada’s beauty extends beyond its endless shores and majestic peaks.

I say this time and time again. I am so fortunate to have had visited most of this glorious country. Sometimes I pause and think about how far I’ve come from a young girl in rural Nova Scotia, daydreaming of escape, to someone who has not lost her sense of adventure and wonder. Manitoba is the last province on my list then I will have visited every province (and one territory) in Canada.

Reconnect with yourself

Sometimes a road trip is just want you need to put a little zest in your life. I had been feeling super low since I incurred this stupid butt injury.

I used to take solo road trips a lot especially after I came back from Korea. Then I discovered trail running and racing, which basically took precedence over sightseeing trips.

Since my mom died, I have been reflecting more on the time I have left, and the things that make me truly happy. I keep coming back to one two of my favourite expressions, “if not now, when?” and “collect experiences not things.”

With those in mind, I finally threw caution to the wind and took a short trip to Saskatchewan. I have never been as south as Medicine Hat, Alberta (just an hour from the SK/AB border) so I stayed in Medicine Hat and took day trips in Saskatchewan.

I’ll be sharing what I did on my trip in separate posts soon. But for now, I wanted this one to focus simply on the importance of doing the things you truly want to do before it’s too late.

So what are you waiting for? Life’s too short to hold back.

Solo trips are incredibly rewarding. Have you taken a solo trip? What is on your bucket list? I would love to hear from you in the comments.
