Shifting my sights to a 100K race in September gives me some breathing room, doesn’t it?
After I decided to defer Sinister 7 until next year, I started thinking about my other race for 2024 – Lost Soul 100K. If you have been reading this blog for awhile, you know I am a fan of this little Lethbridge race. I DNF-ed two years ago (aka I quit) because of some weird stomach nutrition thing. Anyway I don’t want to dwell on that!
Once I decided on my plan, I messaged Dean (one of the Lost Soul race directors. Yes I have him on speed dial) because I immediately began having doubts about my fitness.
Where I should I be in my Lost Soul training now in May?
Dean says, “a 100k runner should be able to jump into a 50K on a week’s notice. With four months out, a runner can use this month to build mileage/durability with probably 10 hours a week. If you less running time, then support with some “leg day” in the gym to compliment the running. The acceptable dose would be three to four hours during the week then at least a three-hour run on the weekend.“
(Looking for a running coach? Find out more about Dean here.)
Got that?
I think my Lost Soul training is not too shabby. After some weeks of staying put between my couch and bed after my mother died, I am now slowly rejoining society and training.
I have been running – I have been getting in solid long runs every other week. (My reoccurring hamstring injury has reared its ugly head so I am trying to do long runs every week until it settles down.) I continue to strength train a few times a week, and hop on my Echelon bike.k
I have already planned a few long-run routes for when I am in Nova Scotia in July. Right now I will stick to Nose Hill for my weekly runs until the snow melts in West Bragg a little more.
As I continue my training for Lost Soul 100K, I’m excited for the days ahead in the mountains.
Sorry about your mum Crystal. Take care of yourself, there will always be races to run.
Thanks Sue. I appreciate it.
