Libra

Dry Run Diaries: Libra IPA by Upstreet Brewing

Ever had that experience where you start considering something, like buying a Prius, and suddenly you spot them on every street? Lately, I’ve been going through a similar phenomenon with non-alcoholic beer. It’s like they’re popping up everywhere I turn.

Turns out, it’s not just a coincidence. This is known as the frequency illusion or the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. I won’t get too much in the weeds but essentially it involves selective attention and confirmation bias. (For a deeper dive, check out this interesting article that explains the complex in more depth.)

This week I stumbled upon Upstreet’s non-alcoholic Libra IPA at London Drug’s, of all places. I find the non-alcoholic beer is following me even when I am not looking for it.

Upstreet Brewing is based in Charlottetown, P.E.I. where they brew a handful of craft beers. Brewing Libra, the no booze beer, was inspired by the owner’s desire to find balance between socializing and health.

Fair enough (because I have heard this obvious linkage a lot). The cool part of this story is the company’s partnership with Juno award-winning artist Serena Ryder. Recognizing Serena’s choice to abstain from alcohol, the company sent her some Libra to try, sparking a unique collaboration. She’s now the Libra’s Balance Ambassador. As part of the partnership, 1% of Libra sales support ArtHaus (a music incubator).

In addition to the Libra IPA, there’s also a pale ale, pilsner, stout and a few other interesting non-alcoholic beers like Libra Lemongrass Ginger Saison.

Cool fact: Upstreet Brewing is a Certified B Corporation – a company that’s been officially recognized for doing good things for people and the planet, not just making money. They follow strict rules to make sure they’re helping society and the environment while still being a successful business.

My Review – Upstreet Brewing’s Libra IPA (355 ml, 50 calories, 04.% ABV)

Name Bling (name creativity) – I don’t find the name terribly innovative but it works. ⭐⭐⭐

Sip n’ Savour (Taste) – Libra IPA is described as “bursting with tropical fruit and mango goodness.” Maybe I am doing something wrong. I can’t taste the mango. Actually I am glad I don’t taste the mango I am not a fan of fruity beers but this one is balanced and crisp without being too overpowering. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wallet Wellness Index (Value for Money) – A four-pack on sale was $7.99 from regular price of $8.99. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Label Love (Packaging/ Presentation) – I like the tag line – “A tropical, fruity, balanced IPA that fits your life. Not the other way around.” I liked the simple design on the box and on the cans. Not too busy, and straight to the point. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall – This is another winner. Most of the no-booze IPAs that I have been trying lately, have really blown me away. If you are looking for another no booze brew, keep a look out for this one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Where to buy: Order online or check out your local grocery store and Loblaws across Canada. Since this is an east coast brewery, I assume you will have more luck finding it in the Maritimes.
