GenX

All is not lost: GenX, earth love and lazy glutes

Three things to note this week: GenX got the go ahead for the AstraZeneca vaccine in Alberta. It was Earth Day on Thursday and I was told I have a lazy butt.

First let’s talk vaccine. GenX, my people, won the socials all week. Think Cabbage Patch kid mania. I loved all the social media shares featuring 80s and 90s memes. Learning that our premier was #GenX didn’t damper our enthusiasm … that much.

I have my vaccine appointment scheduled for next Thursday. So many people I know were some of the first to get jabbed. Way to go GenX – maybe we won’t be known the forgotten generation anymore.

Earth Day was celebrated on Thursday. I consider everyday Earth Day but … you know … The real news is Canada has committed to slashing our greenhouse gases by 40% or 45% by 2030 from its 2005 levels.

If you aren’t good with math, I will break it down for you. In less than eight years. Canada would then have to lower its GHG emissions to 513 megatonnes from roughly 730 megatonnes (2019 stats). In 2019, the combined emissions from the largest emitters – Alberta and Ontario – represented 60% (38% and 22%, respectively) of the nation’s tally. Alberta and Ontario – both led by Conservative governments. Let that sink in a little and draw your own conclusions about the reality of hitting those targets.

Anyhow .. I am THRILLED that Canada has an ambitious target but I got to ask – how is this going to happen?

On to the lazy glutes

As you know I have been trying to get my running house in order. I have been going to Movement Sports Clinic in downtown Calgary for some physiotherapy. We have been working on just about everything downstream. This week I had a new physiotherapist because the other PT had to move to Edmonton for family reasons.

The new PT determined that my glutes are asleep. Essentially they are not firing when they are supposed to be firing so other parts of my lower anatomy take up the slack. Of course this leads to one hot mess of running mechanics. Essentially my glutes have forgotten what they are there for: keeping my pelvis in check and my body in alignment.

Some work ahead in waking up these sleepy glutes. I have armed with tons of glute activation and strengthening exercises. But don’t cry for me, just yet. This is totally fixable and it’s fairly common due to the amount of time we’re sitting on our butts. I went for a short run this afternoon and I mindfully paid attention to what my ass was doing. Despite my crap pace, it was one of the most comfortable runs that I have had in a LONG time.

In other running news, my foot is feeling and looking MUCH better. I can see light at the end of the injury tunnel. I am still very confident that I will be able to train for Lost Soul in September. I just need to cross my fingers that the race will go ahead.

How was your week? What was a win for you this week? Are you GenX? Did you get a vaccine yet? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

  1. Hey Crystal. Welcome to the lazy butt club. I too am working on glute activation and generally trying to increase my strength. I signed up for a personal trainer last fall and have been working with him in the gym twice a week and carrying on the program at least one other day. Can you say hip bridges?
Best of luck, it is making a difference for me.
    I enjoy your blog.

  2. I’ve been working on activating my glutes for a while! So imagine my surprise when I learned recently that my gluteus maximus isn’t firing on the right. Apparently, all those deadlifts don’t target that particular muscle, lol. So it’s back to the basic, PT exercises. Sheesh.
