This morning I received confirmation of my 2021 Blackfoot 100K deferral to 2022. I had put off sending the email requesting a deferral for weeks.
Staring at my swollen foot for hours willing at it to heal quickly wasn’t doing the trick. Deferring the race was my only option. I had to face reality. Besides we’re back at Square 1 in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. I doubt the race will be go head. Race organizers will make a decision on May 1. Another tough season for race directors and charities.
I still have Powderface 42 (July) and Lost Soul 100K (September) coming up later in the season. I am crossing my fingers that the races will go ahead. At this point there is no certainty.
I haven’t run in a couple of weeks now. I am going to get back at it this weekend. The swelling in my foot is still there – but it’s come down a lot. I have been going to physio consistently to work on my tight calves and weak hips. It’s a process.
Deferring the race made the best sense for me. I wasn’t worried about finishing the race. I was concerned about getting enough solid training under my belt. With the race a month or so away I am definitely not there. Who wants to suffer through a 100K without training?
Right now I have to put it out of my mind and avoid all thoughts of FOMO while I concentrate on staying relatively fit and doing my physio exercises. Avoiding STRAVA and Instagram also helps.
I am sick of cycling
Last week I cycled just under 200 kilometres. Two big trips – to Chestermere and to Fish Creek – helped rack up the kilometres. The weather has been pretty accommodating for cycling so I have no complaints. Although I would much rather be running. Every time I pass a runner, I look at him or her with envy or a short urge to run them off the road (just kidding).
I like cycling … I do .. but not more than running. At least I am getting some exercise and I am seeing lots of Calgary. That’s what I have to keep telling myself. Also I went to MEC the other day to pick something up. I casually walked by the cycling department. I noticed a sweet deal on light cycling jackets. I decided to pick one up. I had to buy XXL. I know size does not matter but I thought to myself .. who are these jackets made for? I have seen every shape and size of cyclist on Calgary’s pathways.
Maybe I am just getting a little cabin fever. I haven’t been to the mountains in a couple of weeks. Anyway that’s my news. Thanks so much for reading this week.
Are you deferring any races yet this year? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
