Week 3 training: Wearing my earphones when it’s cold AF

It’s a small thing but the biggest annoyance I have had related to my training these past few weeks have been my earphones.

They turn off in the middle of a podcast. One ear piece slips. I forget to charge them so the battery conks out. I can deal with the latter two – easy fix.

It’s that little sound that indicates my earphones are about to switch off that always stops me mid run. I fumble with it for a few minutes until the light indicates all systems go. For a few minutes, it works then I have to mess around with them again.

Clearly my earphones do not like winter. I know my iPhone is not a fan of cold temperatures and now I have to worry about my earbuds. Winter running is hard.

Don’t fret for me, dear reader.

I have figured it out. No more frozen earbuds. After trying, a few methods in recent weeks, I have found the solution. I must wear a hood, a balaclava or at least something that fully covers my earbuds.

I know it is an obvious solution … but sometimes it takes time to get back into the whole running in winter thing. I am happy to report my earbuds did not fail me all last week. Winning.

Weekday runs

We had a short cold snap for the week. I ran on my treadmill on Tuesday to the annoyance of the people below me. Then on Wednesday and Thursday I ran outside along the Bow River pathways. The pathway was not busy. I nodded at a few regulars but it was nothing like is on a nice day. No speed records but I am feeling stronger every week.

Saturday

I ran the 21k loop around West Bragg again. I wanted to do the Fullerton Loop after the loop but my stomach was feeling uneasy so I called it a day. I like this loop the more I run it and the less I have to worry about directions.

Sunday

It’s been some time since I ran Ridgeback from Station Flats. Return it’s about 19K. It’s basically straight up through the trees to Moose Mountain Road. The trail is well-marked and easy to navigate. I saw a biker and his dog around the 7K mark but other than that it was a very quiet morning. I felt pretty good climbing up and running down. I did get a little confused at one section but I trusted my instinct that I was going the right way.

Funny I came across some kind of axe tool on the trail. No signs of the owner. What was the weirdest thing you have ever seen on a trail?

How was your week in training? When is your first race? I would love to hear for you in the comments below.
