In a year like no other, there are many reasons to be thankful that the chapter on 2020 has finally closed.
It goes without saying (but I will anyway) the wordwide COVID-19 pandemic has left lasting marks on everyone. Nearly every aspect of our lives were changed from mandatory restrictions and social distancing to the way we interacted and the way we worked – at home (for those who still had jobs).
Man, it was a long and exhausting year.
Adios 2020.
Despite the chaos, I did not throw in the towel (because believe me I was very tempted), I managed to do some pretty awesome stuff in 2020. Here are five highlights:
All the vert
I set a goal early in the year to reach 75,000 metres in 2020. Climbing to new heights was extremely rewarding. I had a great summer trotting and hiking in the Canadian Rockies with great companies. Strava confirmed my 85,964 metres in elevation gain. For context, in 2019, my elevation gain rang in at 61,000 metres. I think Strava added in my bike elevation too.
New to me trails/peaks
I wanted to try at least 20 new-to-me trails/peaks in 2020. I quickly surpassed this goal in early July, if not before. I finished the year doing roughly 38 new-to-me peaks and trails. Favourites were Opal Ridge, Pocaterra Ridge and Wasootch Ridge.
Cycling the Highwood Pass and other biking hotspots
In June I cycled the Highwood Pass with Karen. This was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I didn’t have much cycling experience when I decided to tackle the highest paved road in Canada. How hard can it be? I quickly learned it was indeed “challenging.” It was an amazing experience and it solidified in my mind that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
I put my definitely Norco bike to good use in 2020. I cycled roughly 100 kilometres/week at one point. It was wonderful. I got to see parts of Calgary that I have never been before. Additionally I cycled to Johnstone Canyon with Terri and the Legacy Trail with Sona and Laura.
Triple Crown in Canmore
When I think back to when I did East End of Rundle, Ha Ling and Lady MacDonald mountains in one day, I remember how great it felt to be done. This was a long day made longer with the traffic near the Nordic Centre. It was a great experience. Thanks to Aia and Joanna for pushing me along and keeping me motivated.
Northover Ridge
I have wanted to do Northover Ridge for a few summers now. In 2019 we had to turn around because of inclement weather. Not this year. I had a fantastic day with Barry, Sue and Amy. The views were outstanding and literally brought me to tears. Another highlight was seeing a bear in the wild running down the side of the mountain.
What were your highlights of 2020, pandemic aside? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
