I have to be honest with you.
I feel like I have never run two steps before in my life. Who am I? I think my obsession with elevation gain has turned me into a slow-moving turtle machine.
While I spent a lot of time on my feet hiking and trotting this year, I paid little attention to my pace. It was all about the vert.
November: Vert goal 2020 done. Next? Get back to running.
Now as I ‘return’ to running, I feel seriously out of shape. It’s weird I think I am running at a good pace but when I glance down at my Garmin, I am like WTF?
So I have some work to do. Call it my running comeback.
Up first on my comeback list is to establish a consistent running schedule. When did I fall off the wagon? I blame the pandemic. I have eked out a five runs/a week schedule. The other two days I will rest or do some sort of weight training. So far, so good.
Thankfully the weather – apart from last weekend – was very conducive to running. Last weekend I enjoyed the dry, snow free trails in Bragg Creek area. It was fabulous.
You see, the key to consistency is just to do it. Find your why (I don’t want to suck forever at running) and stick to it.
Rewiring my brain to hold a consistent, solid pace comes after establishing consistency. Gosh I run slow but I am fine with this. I know how the running game work but it’s going to take some time to get back in the run of things.
Have you ever mounted a comeback after a time away from running? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
I just ran 6 km today. Yeah. It has been quite a long road to get back to this distance. Hip issues have been a real challenge but in the summer I started with an personal trainer for strength building and a great physio for appropriate exercises. It is a lot of work everyday but it is paying off. I am getting excited about the possibility of a 5 km race when we can all get together again. I am trying not to get caught up in pace but just happy to be running. Good to hear your story Crystal.
