RWR Picks #5: Small town murders, job hunting and monks

Did the groundhog see his shadow? We’re in a middle of a cold snap in Alberta. I don’t mind because it gives me the perfect excuse to be a homebody – reading books and writing in my journal.

Most days, I am rushing around trying to get everything done. Multi-task is my middle name. I am really trying to slow down and to live in the present. Lately I have been listening to some super inspirational podcasts and articles. Personal growth is very important to me. Although some days, I admit, are challenging. That’s why I creating new habits of reading or listening to something inspirational before I start my day and before I go to bed.

Play That Podcast

First Day Back is podcast about people who are trying to get their life together after something changed him or her. I was drawn to this podcast because I like to see people get back on their feet after life happens. Who doesn’t root for the little guy? I didn’t like most of the first season because I am not a mother and I couldn’t relate to the episodes.

I liked season 2, which featured a woman who killed her husband and doesn’t remember doing it. It happened in Lanark County in 2010. I had to stop myself from Googling it while listening because I had vague memories of this case. It’s a good listen.

Are you looking for a job? Want to work on your interview skills? When I was last looking for a job, I stumbled upon Linda Raynier’s stuff. She’s authentic and down to earth. Her content ranges from interviewing on Skype to writing a basic resume. All good stuff.

Read this book

I just finished Living with the Monks: What Turning Off My Phone Taught Me About Happiness, Gratitude and Focus by Jesse Itzler so it is the most fresh in my mind. I had been on a waiting list at the library for weeks. When I have to wait for a book for more than a couple of days, I know the book is going to be good.

Now I have never heard of Jesse Itzler until he was a guest on the Model Health Show. I was impressed enough to place a hold on his book at the library straight away. The book was an easy read. It’s not filled with spiritual teachings or anything like that. Rather it’s about a rich guy who wants to try a new adventure and write a book about it.

At first blush that’s how I read the first few chapters. The more I read, the more I got past my simplistic viewpoint. He does provide some meaningful insights about life and why we are alive. In fact I took notes and added a few of his teachings to my days. Read it.
