RWR Picks #2: Sold in America, Educated, Jane Esselstyn

Happy New Year! Did you get up anything crazy last night? Now is the time that most people start thinking about making changes to improve their lives. I won’t offer any sage advice because I am sure you are already being bombarded with tips on how to succeed, set resolutions, be the best you etc.

But I will offer you my picks in books, podcasts and Youtube channels for this week.

PLAY THAT PODCAST

This eight-episode – Sold in America – documentary about selling sex in the United States is captivating. It may also change your thinking about the sex industry. You may remember “American’s most famous pimp” – Dennis Hof – who died last year. His story was also featured in one of the episodes.

The producers tried interesting ways to connect with listeners during the episodes. Listeners could text a telephone number to offer comments and share their own stories. And the final episode features the listeners’ stories and comments. Viewer discretion is advised as the podcast deals with adult themes.

Are you trying to improve what you put in your body in 2019? Gosh there are so many food and recipe channels out there. Where to begin? Jane Esselstyn films one of my favourite no nonsense channels. Along with her mom Ann, the two offer heart-healthy tips and cooking demonstrations from their How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease cookbook.

The duo’s bather is both amusing and entertaining. The videos are simple without much flash – just a mother and her daughter in the kitchen. You will appreciate the humour, great tips and dishes.

READ THIS BOOK

Bill Gates said you should read Educated: A Memoir in 2018. So did Barack Obama and my friend Laura Davis. Shannon has read it and Sona is reading it this week. CBC‘s The Current featured author Tara Westover in August.

I finished this book in less than a week. It’s that good. I could relate to many things in the book, not the mormon survivalist bit but parts about the crazy childhood.

FINAL WORDS

Please let me know in the comments below if you like this new series. As well I would love to hear what you’re reading or listening to. I will leave you with some food for thought.
