Tonight’s plans were rescheduled … thanks Mother Nature. And it’s my rest day so I thought I would give you a short update on my training.
I have only six weeks to go before I run my second race of the season – Blackfoot 50K near Edmonton. It’s been a few years since I ran this race. I ran my first 50K here in 2013, and a 25K in 2015. The race holds special memories for me! I would like to beat my time from five years ago … but aren’t you supposed to get slower as you age?
For the last couple of weekends, I have run two back-to-back longish runs: 20K and 30K, and 20K and 32K. Mostly it’s because I am playing catch up with mileage. My goal is to hit at least 80K each week in April. Save for one week in March, I have run more than 75K each week since February 19. I don’t think I have ever run so much in winter.
It is the long runs and time on feet that will make my 50K races and 100K race hurt less this year. I can’t wait to get out to the mountains. While I wait for the snow to melt, I will have to run around and around Red Deer. Let me tell you running the same trails gets pretty boring. I tried some new-to-me routes on the county roads near Three Mile Bend. It’s been a welcome change.
On Sunday my iPod froze on one podcast. I couldn’t switch to music or change the podcast. It was frustrating but a nice distraction as I tried to figure out what to do. In the end, I just sang out loud to myself.
Thankfully I haven’t had any concerns with my legs or anything else. (Knock on wood). I think the strength training and core work is paying off. With that being said, I missed the gym the last two weeks because I was super busy with work and other engagements. I had to choose run or gym. I always chose the run. My plan this week is to go one morning before work. I will keep you posted.
I have been doing stretching and mobility at home so that counts. My weight seems to be falling off now. My pants are quite loose. Likely it’s only a pound or two. I’ve been doing really good with my food intake and the only thing I need more of is sleep!
Once again I pat myself on my back for buying my treadmill last year. I think at this point … when there is still snow on the ground and in the forecast in April … I would be going a little crazy without the option to run inside. Like everyone else, I am fed up with the snow but I am not going to dwell on it. One way or another, I will get my runs in.
No excuses.
Those are awesome kilometers, you kind of amaze me!
