Do you lose your fitness after four days?

I woke up Sunday morning feeling hungry. I needed coffee and a shower. Since Thursday afternoon, I had been in bed or on the couch. Out of nowhere on Thursday, I started to feel weak and nauseated. I wrapped things up early at work (2 p.m.) and headed home to bed. The next few days were a blur. I couldn’t keep any food down and my entire body ached. I nearly overdosed on Netflix. (I think I am good for the next three months)

I’m not sure what came over me. I traced my unexpected sickness to possibly a store-bought muffin (Thursday morning) and old half eaten veggies and lentils (Wednesday around noon). I almost never get sick. When my entire office was sick with the flu this past winter, I did not even catch a sniffle. My vegan powers kept me strong.

Thankfully I’m on the mend, and I wasn’t down for the count any longer.

The whole time I have been thinking about how this hiccup screwed up my training this week. I only ran 30K before I got sick. I hate not being able to run. In the big scheme of things, I know four days off is not going to seriously screw up my training. It just sucks missing workouts especially when the weather has been somewhat good.

My next “race” is Blackfoot 50K on May 26, exactly two months. How did that happen? I feel like this race has just creeped up on me. I’m not freaking out though. My running has been consistent and I feel strong (let’s forget I have been sick for four days). There’s no more fooling around with my long runs though. I had planned to run 30K this weekend but obviously that didn’t pan out. I’m not too worried. I will hit it next weekend!

Meanwhile … here’s my latest column in the Red Deer Advocate. I talked to Ponoka’s Slade McCormick who’s training for Big’s Backyard Ultra. It’s pretty timely since this weekend is the Barkley Marathons. Are you glued to #bm100 on Twitter like I am?
