My strong comeback after falling on black ice

Thanks for all your well wishes. I’m back to running after my silly mishap.

I took two days of rest last week to recover from my fall from grace. Um .. I mean falling on black ice. Thankfully my fall did not do too much damage. I was back on the treadmill within a couple of days and it has been go, go and go. Now I am super paranoid about running outside in the dark. Ice everywhere!

Despite having to take a couple extra rest days, I clocked 67K last week (just three kilometres short of my goal). I even ran a half-marathon on the treadmill. Honestly it wasn’t hat bad. I have made peace with running on the treadmill and it’s working out great. (I just need some good movie recommendations.)

Thankfully my foot seems to be just fine. I am still a little stiff in the shoulders so I am doing more stretches throughout the day. This week I am going to start add one faster or speedwork on the treadmill. Currently I am just running with no goal pace. I just want to get the time on my feet and the mileage. I can’t afford to get any slower than I already am if I want to finish my races this year.

Core strength

These days I am obsessed with improving my core strength. I will need a strong core to keep me upright for anywhere up to 20 hours (the cut off) for my 100K in September. Not to mention, I will need the stability to survive those three 50Ks and 60K race. I’ve been switching it up at the gym with different exercises to surprise my muscles. It’s been a couple of months now and I can’t really tell if I have made any gains. The only difference is that it doesn’t hurt as much when I perform the Russian twist. Maybe that’s a sign I’m getting stronger?  Whatever the case, I am going to continue getting my core in order.

Nutrition

I downloaded this awesome app called Dr. Gregor’s Daily Dozen. It’s an awesome app that allows you to track what you are eating: beans, berries, greens etc. and it gives the recommended servings.  I love it because it has been a real eye opener. Now I think I eat pretty good. Yes I will have the odd handful of vegan chips from the office or toast for dinner. What I learned is that I am not getting enough fats in my diet and I over estimate the amount of vegetables that I eat. (Some days are better than others.)

My strong comeback after falling on black ice
Making bread with Sona on Saturday.

Speaking of nutrition …. Sona and I made two loaves each of bread from scratch on Saturday. It was so easy and so tasty. Did I ever mention my addition to bread? Gosh I used to love the smell of bread cooking in the oven. I could eat homemade bread every day. It’s so good especially right out of the oven. Now you know why I need an app to ensure I’m getting all the nutrients that I need ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. So glad you recovered so quickly! I completely wiped out on black ice last year, feet flying, flat on my back, cracked my head on the ice and now I am SO paranoid of slipping Looks like bread-making was fun, you inspired me to make my own today, for the very first time! Turned out okay!
