A few weeks ago I was invited to join other local media at a new downtown pub for a preview night. I knew most of the guys and there were a few others that I had met once or twice. We were split into two tables – the vegan/vegetarian table and the omnivores. (At least that’s how I referred to them.)
I was excited to learn that Allie had just gone vegan about two weeks ago. We instantly fell in like and followed each other on all social media platforms. Over the course of the evening, we had a few people stop at our table to say hello. (Media celebrities, ya know.) Jest and Marilou stopped by to chat with Allie. Introductions and such and suddenly we were all doing the vegan power salute.
Fast forward a few days later, we formed a vegan Red Deer group on Facebook. I wanted a group that was more active than the passive posting of food photos. I want good people, good conversations, social gatherings, and advocacy efforts.
Allie was totally on board. And Eat Like You Give A Damn (Vegan Red Deer 2.0) was formed.
Eat Like You Give A Damn (Vegan Red Deer 2.0) group description:
We are a group of like-minded humans in who believe in peace, love and compassion for all – whether you have two feet or four. We identify as vegans, herbivores or plant-eaters etc. This is a safe place to share information, recipes and advocacy efforts.
Stay tuned for some upcoming events including vegan potluck party, vegan picnic/barbecue and bring an omnivore night. Kombucha anyone?
Don’t we sound awesome? Join us. You don’t have to be vegan/vegetarian to join but be forewarned we will try to convert you.
Last Friday we held our first Eat Like You Give A Damn (Vegan Red Deer 2.o) potluck at Jest’s place. The food was amazing and it wasn’t awkward at all. Great food and conversation. (You know how it is sometimes when you meet new people.) It was great to catch up with Mark and to finally meet his fiancé Karin. Over the summer we plan to have another potluck and picnic. I even want to plan a “bring a carnivore” night to showcase some of the amazing vegan food.
I can count on my one hand the people I know in Red Deer who are either vegetarian or vegan. It’s five (Sona, Brent, Mark, Karin and Susan). I am excited to meet new people and step up my advocacy efforts.
It is perfect timing in my world to start a new vegan venture. Lately I have been waiting to do more and I think this will be the perfect opportunity.
What a great idea! Oh, I wish I wasn’t so weak……
I left you some instructions on your blog, which will fix your weakness issue 🙂
That sounds great! My husband is a vegan and most people don’t get it until we make a meal for then
Come visit! I love cooking for people 🙂
