Bikram Hot Yoga: No one ever drowned in sweat

Crystal, what posture do you want to demonstrate today?

Adam, the visiting instructor asks the question as I chat with a friend in the hallway just before Bikram Hot Yoga. Startled I looked blankly in his direction. Jackie, one of the owners, smirks and offers a suggestion. Ugh, I think. There goes my plan to hide quietly in a corner in the back. (On a side note it is game over for hiding in the back when the instructor knows your name.)

Oh Bikram yoga why you gotta be so mean?

It was only my second yoga class this week. Running snagged the starring role in my week. The theme is balance so I do not go completely bonkers. I was worried that I may have been a little dehydrated for class as I squeezed in a quick 6K run in at lunch. Surprisingly the two litres I gulped down at 3 p.m. seemed to have done the trick. I wasn’t reaching for my water bottle throughout the class.

Class was good. A few weeks ago I would have flung myself toward to the nearest exit before I would ever be comfortable having all eyes on me in my two piece yoga costume. Not today. I was fine with falling over in the posture while I was demonstrating. I knew I would get it the next time.

The body achieves what the mind believes, right?

I love being corrected in class. I tell all the instructors not to hold back. Give me all the feedback. I have already noticed little differences in my postures. I am getting closer to touching my forehead to my knees and all that jazz. My breathing is better and my shoulders are starting to loosen up. Yay for small successes.

I’ll be back at the mat tomorrow. It’s going to be a fun class as I will be wearing my glasses. I am having a LASIK consult in Edmonton on Saturday. So in order for the doctors to have a good look at my eyes, I have to keep my contacts out for at least 24 hours.

I may just have to stand in the front row to see my smiling happy face in the mirror.

Peace.

  1. What posture did you do? I love yoga, but rarely do Bikram. The few classes I have been to I have enjoyed, however 1 of them I may have just laid on my mat for an hour, enjoy the sweat.
    Yoga this weekend?

Balancing stick pose. Would love to but got to get back to Red Deer. Heading to mountains on Sunday. Thanks for stopping by! We have to go to Bikram in Edmonton or come here and you can come to my studio!

    1. Yeah it was scary at first 🙂 But now I just don’t give a damn. The other yogis are too busy staring at themselves in the mirror to give me a second glance. I am comfortable in my own skin now so whatever, if you don’t like my muffin top, then look away lol
