Oh my quads!

I am getting closer to finding the source of my pain in my right leg/foot. Today I had an appointment with a new member of my medical team. I am determined to nip this stupid injury in the bud.

A few months ago the doctor said I have inflammation in my right hip, which is causing all my woes. He handed me a prescription for anti-inflammatories and pointed in the direction of the nearest pharmacy. The pills worked. (I even helped myself to Pedro’s prescription for his injury.)

But eventually the pills wore off and my pain returned when I picked up my pace and ran longer distances. So I have been trying desperately to eat the right foods and stretch enough to put an end to my discomfort. In fact, I am making improving my flexibility one of goals for 2016. (I signed my life away to Bikram Yoga Red Deer in a year contract.)

I was told today that my extremely tight quads may be causing my discomfort. I was asked to perform this simple quad flexibility test, which I failed miserably.

It’s crazy because I know how important my quads are for proper and pain-free running. Quads are responsible for bending and strengthening the knee and work together with the hammies for movements like running and balance. So what did I do? All day at work I stood up every 10 minutes to stretch my quads. Usually I focus on my hammies because they usually give most runners grief. Clearly I have been overlooking the front of my leg!

I will keep you up-to-date with my progress. I just want to run. Is that so wrong?

By the way, did you know it’s #shirtlessfebruary? It’s a thing that started in Calgary by Terry and Joanna. Rachel and I took the challenge while we were in Bragg Creek on Sunday. I took it to Red Deer on Monday.

No one ever said runners weren’t fun.

  2. I have foot pain too!! My PT said it was my Piriformis Syndrome along with a tight SI joint. I did loads of physio exercises and it went away only to come back with a vengeance! I will concentrate on my quads! Good luck to you!!!!!!
By the way, what were the flexibility tests?
