Yoga for broken runners?

This winter I really, really wanted to go to yoga. I wanted to integrate it into my training and overall fitness. I signed up for an unlimited Bikram yoga pass for October. It was going pretty good until last week. I think I over did it or something. My right shoulder, arm and hand are screaming bloody murder.

I’ve had some issues with my shoulder (thanks crossfit) in the past but it usually calms down with rest. Now I am having second thoughts of buying a membership. I am not very familiar with yoga so I am not sure if this is the right yoga for me. Should I just work through the pain and hope for the best?

I am going to look into other yoga studios before I make up my mind. Trina stopped going to Bikram because of the pressure on her shoulder. It’s a big investment because I already pay $126 a month for crossfit. But I decided that working on my mobility and flexibility is  worth the additional expense. (I would just have to reduce my monthly budget by another $100+).

Decisions. Decisions.

What’s your favorite type of yoga? Why? Any suggestions?

  1. I went to Vinyasa yoga today and it was fantastic….just what I needed. It was a good challenge but my body felt so alive and relaxed afterwards. Is there any gentle yoga classes that you could take? Or can you speak to a yoga instructor and explain your situation with your shoulder/pain and see what they suggest?

I should look into other classes. (I mean I will look into other classes). Good plan. I want to try Vinyasa sometime too.

  2. I do not have a favorite yoga but I do look for an instructor who can demonstrate and correct my poses. So I can do it safely with getting the most stretch. Yoga should never hurt the body, it should release the pain. And you should tell the instructor that you have pain at the beginning of the class and they should modify it for you. If they don’t then you should leave and never come back.

Yes yoga shouldn’t hurt. Thanks for the tips & stopping by.

  3. I do yoga a lot and have for years. I find that it is the perfect compliment to my running (and crossfit). But I don’t do Bikram or hot yoga. While the heat allows you to open up more deeply into a pose, that can also make you push your body too far and can lead to injury. I do hatha yoga…I like vinyasa.
