Exploring: Dry Island Buffalo Jump

I don’t like to waste a perfectly good weekend. So the day after I ran the Blackfoot 25K trail race I headed to Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park. Whew! That name is a long one to wrap your head around.

The park is about 100km southeast of Red Deer. However, I drove from Sherwood Park on Sunday. It took about two and a half hours. I didn’t mind the drive along the country roads.
It was a glorious day for a drive and a short hike. I didn’t mind that I ran out of gas and I was forced to drive to Trochu to fill up. Note to self: There’s no gas to be found in Elnora on a Sunday.
My coworker Trevor and his girlfriend went to the park on Saturday. It’s funny because I never heard about the park until two weeks ago.

There was a guy suntanning near the access point of the park. He was waiting for his parents.
The road that leads to the day use area is closed during wet conditions. It’s a slippery when wet situation that nobody wants to be in.

I didn’t see too may people out and about. They were mostly tucked into the treed areas enjoying picnic and family time.
This lone man was fishing in the Red Deer River. He had been there for three hours and he had no bites.
I played with the timer on my iPhone a little bit. I wanted photo proof that I was at the park. Yes I look slightly dorky. Thankfully I did not get caught in the act.

I was mentally picturing running while I hiked up the coulees.

I need to come back another time when my legs weren’t feeling the efforts of a Saturday run. It truly is a magical place worth more than one visit.
Pretty cool, right? One of my goals this summer is to camp more. I didn’t do nearly as much last year.
Alberta has a lot of great spots worth exploring. What are you waiting for?

  1. Okay, you're thinking "slightly dorky" and I'm thinking "pretty amazing"! The guy in the river kinda looks like he's doing something other than fishing lol. The name Buffalo Jump sounds really familiar to me, I think I remember hearing somewhere that they used to herd the buffalo there and drive them right off the cliff, making it pretty easy to get the food and hides they needed back in those days, wonder if there's more than one Buffalo Jump! Anyway, awesome pics all-round and you continue to make me truly jealous!!

    1. Ha ha you're right. Let that man fish! You're also right about the buffalo jumps. What a smart concept. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Looks like a really neat spot to explore! I book some sort of camping almost every single weekend of the summer since that's my only real "vacation" option. the province is full of hidden gems!
