Running to Stand Still

It took all of my willpower not to go stir crazy on this past three-day weekend. I try to live an active life and when I can’t be active, I get a little nutso. All my sanity wheels come off. I have no willpower or common sense. In order to fill the void, I eat way too much and become a complete slug. It doesn’t help that I haven’t talked to another person since Friday.
Around 3 p.m. on Sunday, I couldn’t handle it anymore. My foot felt good thanks to all the extra attention. Damn it I was going for a short run. Ready to go, I geared up only to notice my Garmin was not charged. Normally I wouldn’t care but I wanted to record my distance. (It may be my last run in awhile.) So I plugged it in and used the time while it charged to about 40% to warm up. Squats anyone?
I embraced all the positive energy that I had within me. I wanted to run at least 5K (but really 8K). I reached the end of my street and I felt pretty good. I started at a 6 min/km pace to east into the run. It was when I went below 5:30 min/km when I felt the pain in my hamstring. I tried not to glance down at the Garmin. I race an even pace until I got to about 4 km. That’s when I stopped to regroup and take in my surroundings. I was thrilled to see the snow had finally melted on this trail. It sure was slippery over the winter.
I watched some geese for awhile before I turned around and headed for home. Both my foot and hamstring seemed to enjoy the trail. No aches or complaints. My Garmin showed that I had an 5:28 average for my 8K run which is around the 42-minute mark. I am cool with that because it was a comfortable pain-free pace.
Immediately after my run, I rolled out my foot and my legs. So far, so good. Rest seems to be doing the trick.
