(Ultra) Marathon Monday: In training

I am back!

I ran 64 kms last week. While it took me a while to do the math, I am happy to get back into the run of things.

I am running back-to-back long runs as part of my training this year. I started this week with 10 miles (16 kms) on both Saturday and Sunday. I am easing into it as I build my mileage. The whole idea is to get used to running on tired legs. Some ultra runners swear by it! I am not claiming to be an expert but I have a plan.

I’m not an idiot so I will not do anything that will put me at risk for injury. I won’t run back-to-back long runs every week. I know my body could not handle it. I need to recover properly. Besides it is January and I expect there will be weeks where it will be near impossible to run outside.

My plan is to run a solo longish run on Saturdays (at least 16 km) and to run with Laura on Sundays as she trains for her half-marathon and marathon. I think joining her group on Sundays will be great for me this winter. As you know the winter of 2014 was a tough and challenging one for me.

I am loosely following a training plan from Relentless Forward Progress. I plan to run 80 kms a week to train for Blackfoot. This will be a big shift for me. I usually only average about 65 km a week in training due to my lofty time management. (I am already behind on my Saturday long run distance.) Crossfit and weekly hill training are also key to my strategy this winter.

Whoo hoo I am excited to be back in training mode.

  1. Alright, back to training! I look forward to seeing how it goes. I still can't convert km's to miles in my head lol, but I know that you'll be running a lot!

  2. I love being back in training mode too! It seems though that when I get back into the swing of training things, I come down with a cold. I'm off sick today because of just this reason. 🙁 You were sick recently too weren't you ? Any suggestions/remedies?

    1. Drink apple cider vinegar with hot water and lemon! Works like a charm on sore throats or pending sore throats. Ginger too!

  3. Awesome! Sounds like a great plan. Can't wait to see how your races go with the jump in mileage!

  4. Wow, congratulations on the big mileage this week! I did an awful lot of back to back runs training for Goofy and I found them really beneficial. They really did help me get used to running on tired legs. It was also good mental training too!

    Happy training!

  5. lol So far, I have run ONE kilometer this year!! I maand y get out later on today and TRIPLE that by running TWO kilometers!! Been babying a very tender ankle/foot am loathe to overdo it (although I think I am very much UNDERdoing it right at the moment lol) Great training plan, Crystal, looking forward to following your progress!

    1. lol Sorry about that, I began "speaking in tongues" at the start of that second sentence but then changed my mind……hope you can figure it out!
