I set out around noon for my long run. Usually I run early in the morning because I don’t like putting off my runs. Besides I love the calm of the morning. It’s so quiet and peaceful. I decided to sleep in a bit and take my time getting ready.
I didn’t have much choice in where I could run because I do not have my car. It wasn’t blazing hot when I started but by the end of it, I was (even more) suntanned and bloody hot. I headed for the trees. I took a few pictures along the way. I never know how well they will turn out because I can barely see the screen on my iPhone.
I lived in my old place for about 3 years, just four months short of the entire time I have lived in Red Deer. I know every route around my apartment and how long it takes to reach a certain area of the city. It’s a great skill. Since I moved I now have the joy of calculating the distance between destinations. I like to know so I can plan my running routes more efficiency. I hate the guess work.
I ran down to the trails near the 67th Street bridge. I came in on the trail in Garden Heights. There wasn’t many people around. It’s also good to know my place is only 4km away from the closest outdoor toilet. I must have drank three cups of coffee before I hit the road.
I wanted to be on my feet for three to three and a half hours. When I train for an ultra-marathon, I think time on feet as opposed to fast times. I ran to the Michener Hill for hill work (8 kms). This is one long and winding hill. I wanted to practice my down hills and hiking up hills. I’ve always heard it’s important to practice “hiking/walking” up hills for your trail races. I know there will be times when I am hiking up the hills at Lost Souls.
This is the sign at the top of the Michener Hill. It’s named after the Right Honourable Roland Michener aka “Canada’s Jogging Governor General.” Great to learn a little history while you’re catching your breath at the top of a hill.
Oh and here’s another steep hill that I power walked up and ran down. Still sad that I wasn’t in Canmore. I tried to make the best of it by running as many hills as I could find. It was on pavement but it was better than nothing. Running at Riverbend with my new trail shoes isn’t an option because I can’t run on pavement with them. Until I get my car (or a rental) I will be running in my road shoes. Better than nothing!
I hope you had a great Sunday!
Loved the scenery! The thing that really bugs me about taking hill pics is that they NEVER show the hill in its true demonic form! They should make Hill-O-Vision or something! Cheers!
I agree! Tough to show how steep they are!
