Scenes of my 30K run

It just feels like only yesterday that I started training for Calgary. But today I ran my final long training run before the big day on June 1. In this training cycle I ran more LSD runs than I have in my past training. I feel pretty good about finishing Calgary. My only regret is not getting enough speed/tempo runs into the books.

I started out around 8:15 a.m. It was chilly when I started. Soon I was overheated and predictably overdressed. I met Shannon at Starbucks who would run with me for part of the way. Glad to have had some company. Sometimes I get too much in my head and it makes the run painfully long. When I met Shannon I had already been on my feet for two hours.

This first picture is my signal that soon my feet would be touching dirt. The second picture is where I dropped my iPhone. I didn’t realize my iPhone fell out of pack until I was at the end of the trail. I was pretty calm as I turned around. I didn’t want to start freaking out about what it would mean if I lost my mobile. I had to backtrack about 2K before I found my phone being mauled by a squirrel.

Some of the ugliest signs in Red Deer are along the trails. This one must be from the 1960s. Thank goodness some of the signs are currently being replaced.

I hate to see trees chopped down. I think these trees were removed for a sewer line or something. As a self-proclaimed tree-hugger, I was a little sad.
I run over this bridge way too many times in the course of any given week. There’s a little hill to the left which always kills my legs after my long run. Yesterday these punk kids were hanging over the side of the bridge.
All in all it was a great run. I was a little shaky for the first 4ks but I managed to pull myself out of the doldrums. The thought of losing my iPhone really got me moving. I slowed down considerably for the last 4k because my right leg was hurting. I decided I would only go to crossfit twice a week until after my marathon. I haven’t been recovering as quickly as I would have liked from the WODs.

Friday’s WOD was definitely a chipper. It was also a scaled regional WOD. My hip flexors were not cooperating so I scaled the weight of the wall balls. I was lapped on the rower by two guys which was not surprising as I struggle with rowing. I watched some of the Crossfit regionals while I was rolling out my legs from today’s efforts. Gosh those athletes are rockstars! I missed the team events so I didn’t see any of the Pure athletes.

All I can think now is … bring on the taper!
