Track on Saturday: Ladder intervals

I decided to shake things up at the track. Steve was joining me so I wanted to make it fun. I think it would be boring for him to run 10x800ms for his first track experience.

We met at my place and we ran to the track. I find 3K is always a perfect distance for a warm up. When I get to the track, I usually do some dynamic stretching and strides before I get down to business.

A man dressed in a tracksuit struck up a conversation while I was stretching out. It turns out he is a Masters track and field competitor – Merv Armstrong. He has medalled at world and international competitions. I found this article about Merv from about 10 years ago.

We chatted with Merv for about 10 minutes. Such a nice guy. He offered some great advice about training and offered to teach me how to throw the discus. I had to chuckle when he mentioned he is moving into a new age category in his upcoming season. He was a little nervous about it. I think we can all relate!
Anyway … back to our workout. I don’t usually like to do my interval training the day before my long run but I had no choice this week. I decided we would go up the ladder (400m, 800m, 1200m and 1600m). I thought it may be too much for Steve to go down and I wanted him to enjoy his first track outing.
I maintained my pace throughout the intervals (and pass Steve on the longer intervals). I liked this workout. I need to shake things up more often. Running Yasso 800s gets a little dull after awhile but I will be back at them next week!

My legs and butt have finally recovered from Monday’s weighted lunges. After our WOD, we had to do alternative leg lunges carrying a 25 pound plate over our head for 5 lengths of the gym. Man I hate lunges. My right leg/hip/foot is still a little wonky so I probably should have skipped the cash out. Instead I powered through (and cheated a little which I got called out for!).

I ran with Shannon aka Red Deer Foodie again this week. We ran a leisurely 8K along the closed trails in Red Deer. Good times!

And the day is finally here …. tomorrow I will run my last long run of this training schedule. I am aiming for whatever comes first – 32K or 3 and a half hours. There’s no real benefit being out any longer.
