Run Central Alberta: Blackfalds, short of Lacombe

It’s Day 22 of my #RunToCanadaDay streak. I felt the effects today. I really need a rest day. But I didn’t want to give up on the challenge. I texted John on Monday night to ask if he would be up for a 10K run. I would drive to his town – Blackfalds. I needed support!

As luck would have it, he was up for a run! Yippee! We met at his place after work on Tuesday. We agreed to run the Blackfalds to Lacombe trail. I’ve heard that it was a scenic route. I wasn’t sure of the distance. John said it was about 10K each way so we decided to run 5K in one direction and turn around.

I warned John that I had to document this first run along the way. (My blog has been lacking photos lately!)

John is anything but slow but I loved this picture. I noticed “slow” when we ran up the hill and I knew I had to capture the scene when we turned around.

Blackfalds is a booming town just north of Red Deer. There’s not much to see but there’s a nice bar called Resolve. That’s where all the locals hang out but there’s a new Boston Pizza lounge in town so this will likely change.
Most of the trail is paved but there were parts like this. I bet in the fall/summer it is absolutely beautiful. Right now everything is pretty dull.

The lake was still frozen over. We ran over the bridge next to the lake. Again this must be absolutely wonderful when the snow is gone.

The washrooms along the trails in Red Deer never seem to be open. I don’t care. Find me a bush and I will do my business.
It wouldn’t be a run without running over a bridge. See the biker in the distance? He says to me, “no pictures please.” It was kinda cute. Speaking of cute or embarrassing, John mentioned he noticed me on Tinder. Yikes! Thankfully he did not swipe right. How embarrassing would it be to see someone you know?
Indeed there were horses! In fact there were a few local farms where horses were grazing.

Fun run! John and I had a beer (okay 2) post-run at Resolve. Loved this trail! There were a lot of tight corners and it was very hilly! I plan to come back next week and run the entire distance. I was super tired but I pushed through.
Today is a semi-rest day. I planned to go to Crossfit at 6 a.m. but I slept through my alarm. I have to tutor after work so the 5:45 p.m. class won’t work. I guess I will get back at it on Thursday!

One of my goals is to run through a good chunk of Central Alberta communities this year. Stettler was checked off on Saturday. Next up is Sylvan Lake this weekend!

Have a great Wednesday!

  1. Haha so funny your comments about Tinder. I'm also on there for a kick and I almost deleted it the first time I came across someone I knew…such an awkward situation.

    Looks like a great run!

    1. Yeah seriously ha ha ha I should delete it too. I just kinda go on it for fun now and then!

  2. We still have piles of the white stuff here and there – mainly ugly dirty snow πŸ™ Sure can't wait for all the trees to fill out and flowers to bloom a little more! Love the "slow" photo!
