I was a reader before I ever took up running. Reading saved me in many ways. Growing up, I turned to books for escapism, adventure and knowledge. I read my way through university and college. I read while I travelled and taught in countries where English books were traded like baseball cards.
I probably read more than the average person if you take into account the copious amount of reading required for my job. This doesn’t count though. I love a good novel. Last year I finally signed turned to Good Reads, the online and app virtual library where readers post reviews and keep track of what they have read. There’s also forums, groups and recommendations. You can even take a peek at what’s on your friend’s bookshelf. The tagline? Meet your next favourite book. I could spend hours on Good Reads. I just need to remember to log my books!
This month I am going cover to cover with the 2014 Canada Read Series. If I were better organized, I would have read the books before listening to the battle rounds. I loved hearing the lively and intelligent discussions. Who would have thought that such prominent Canadian figures would rally behind books? I love that this year’s theme is one novel to change a nation.
I am saving the winning novel, Orenda to the end. So far I read devoured Half-Blood Blues. I have all the books on hold at the library. Once I finish Oryx and Crake, I will move onto Atwood’s book. I have read a few pages and I have a feeling that I have read this one before. Don’t you hate that?
FIVE CONTENDERS:
- Cockroach by Rawi Hage
- Annabel by Kathleen Winter
- Orenda by Joseph Boyden
- Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan
- The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood

Getting more sleep has been a goal of mine for so long. I don’t even say it out loud anymore. I’ve been getting a lot of shut eye lately. So much I don’t want to get out of bed! Ha ha. Binge reading fits nicely with my marathon training because I get to put my feet up and rest while I read. Brilliant, right?
Reading is something we should not take for granted. I was thinking about this on Tuesday while I was tutoring an ESL student. I know her situation is different because she’s learning to read in a second language. But I can’t help but think we are so fortunate to have the gift of reading. It’s one of the most affordable and enriching activities for the whole family.
Random note: At the bookstore on Saturday, I noticed this display for Richard Adams’ Watership Down. Loved this book. Anyway my point is … read books. It’s good for your mind and soul.

LOVE reading! Depending on the length of the book, I can read 1-3 books a month. Right now I'm finally reading the Outlander series, they're good, but LONG.
I'm also a reader. My mom used to tell me to stop reading and watch tv or something. LOL Once, I sat down in front of the tv and tried to remember what I was watching… then I remembered that the "show" I was "watching" was a book I was reading.
I just finished re-reading the Outlander series for the 5 or 6th time… I'm excited for the next book, which s out a few days before my birthday in June, and teh TV series they are making (omg I can't wait!). I also just read "We are Water" by Wally Lamb, which was a good but at-times uncomfortable read.
There are a few books (running related and novels) that I want to look for at my local library, but I haven't found the time yet. Soon, i hope! I actually enjoy re-reading books, so I don't mind not having something new to read. My current re-read favorites are "Chameleon" by sugar rautbord and "She's come undone" by Wally Lamb.
I love to read, but since having kids I find it's really hard to find/make time for it. Lately I've been running, and even driving with audiobooks and it has revolutionalized my 'reading'! I'm listening to the Signature of all Things right now and loving it.
That's great! I know so many people that listen to audiobooks. One day I have to give them a try!
I love reading too! I am currently re-reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed!
