Lindsey: I am a Runner

Live from Edmonton, it’s Lindsey from Blissful Miles. Don’t you just love the name of her blog? It has a lovely ring to it. I wish all my miles and kilometres were blissful. I’d be lying if I said they were! Lindsey’s tagline is – Everyday is a good day when you run! Now that’s the truth.

Grab a coffee, pull up a chair and enjoy getting to know Lindsey.

Name: Lindsey
City: Edmonton
Profession: Government Policy (City Planning degree)
Runner Since: 2001

1. Why did you start running? What pushes you to keep going?
I started running for something different to do that was low cost. My first race was a 10k in the middle of a Winnipeg winter. I ran on and off but didn’t seriously start training until 2008. I keep running because it brings a sense of calm to my life unlike anything else. In fact, I think I find more peace on a trail than on my yoga mat.

2. What is your favourite distance to run?
Half marathons. I am admittedly a one pace runner so I get better over longer distances.

3. Best or worst running memory that you love to share? Tell us about it.
Best – My first marathon because my parents came out from Winnipeg and were at the finish line waiting for me.
Worst – Shortly after moving to Edmonton my childhood asthma resurfaced and I had a frightening asthma attack while trail running with no inhaler! It is more under control now, but it definitely took me by surprise.

4.Do you run solo or with a group?
I prefer running long runs with a group because they can be pretty boring solo. At the end of a long hard day I love to let of steam running a shorter tempo run alone with my thoughts.

5. What is your dream race? Tell us about it.
I would love to run Big Sur for the scenery!

6. How many medals do you own? Where are they?
Hmm not a ton. They are in a drawer somewhere… I don’t really keep race t-shirts either.. I tend to donate them all.

7. Do you have any current running goals?
Yes! I want to run a 1:45 (or sub 1:45) half. I also want to get a faster 5 and 10k under my belt.

8. Best piece of running advice you’ve ever received ….
Run your own race! It is so true because it can be very easy to get caught up with what is going on around you. It also helps me tune into what I am feeling on the day.

9. If you could tell your younger (less experienced) running self something, what would you say?
Don’t run through the pain. I have had some pretty silly injuries that probably could have been avoided if I backed off at the first signs of pain and soreness.
