Scenes from my 28K Run

I felt absolutely wonderful on my long run today. That is until I let hunger pains get the better of me. I planned to run a 30K at a comfortable pace. I waited until it warmed up a bit before I set out. I knew I would be on my feet for at least three hours and I wanted the sun on my face.

Once again I wasn’t very adventurous in my route. I ran a lot of out and backs and loops. I must remind myself to plot a better route next week.
I started my run with this dirt trail. I was very optimistic in the hope I would see dirt for my entire run.
I was so wrong. This part wasn’t too bad. But there were other stretches that were pure madness. I couldn’t get my footing but I just rolled with it.

Shortly after I took this picture, a bunch of teenagers came up over the hill. One brave soul decided to climb the windmill. I didn’t stick around long enough to see whether he made it to the top or fell to his injury or death.

Hmm can’t remember exactly where I took this picture. I don’t recognise the area one bit.

I’ve decided I want to make this my new hill for repeats. Looks lovely, right? In the spring/summer time I run through the trails so I don’t actually go on the pavement. Because the trails are closed, I had no choice but to run up the hill.

You can’t say our city wastes money on signs. This was posted near Bower ponds, a popular gathering spot for families. There’s two skating ponds, a playground and a tea house on the grounds.
Here’s the bridge that I run over at least a dozen times a week. The snow has nearly melted on top but it was quite icy below. It was here I knew I could not go on … my stomach was growling like really loud. I was so close … 28K and I only had 2 more kilometres to go before I could call it a day. But today I gave into my belly. I thought screw it and ran home!
Do you ever get hungry on your runs? What do you do?

  1. Great job on your run Crystal!!
I do get hungry on my long runs. I usually take honey stinger chews or Gu chomps for when I do. The Gel sometimes makes me feel a little better too when I get hungry on the run. I like the sliding hill sign. 🙂

  2. I get hungry too, and have had to "give up" a few times because of it. I'm hypoglycemic, so I always try to differentiate between my *stomach* being hungry, and my *body* needing some fuel. If it's just my stomach, I'll try to tough it out, but once my head starts spinning, my legs get weak and my hands get tingly, I know I have to stop. I try to take a snack with me in case this happens… I have a baggie of chocolate chips in my jacket pocket!

I think 28k is still quite an accomplishment!

  3. Okay, I ran about a third of that distance yesterday and it just about killed me! Enjoyed the pics, always nice to see patches a bare earth these days. Hard to believe you witnessed a young person committing a death-defying feat and the reporter in you didn't force you to stick around so you could be the "first on the scene"! Great run, you amaze me!
