That day when it was cold .. um … every Canuck winter day

I met Brent at his house at 9 a.m. We have a couple Sunday mornings together before we go our long run separate ways. We’re both using the same running program but for different race distances. Once my “actual” training begins, I have to run longer & faster long runs. So we will meet only at the track for our weekly sessions.

Time sure passes when you have company on the long runs. While I love listening to podcasts on distances over 20k, I enjoy some company on my shorter long runs. I will miss running with Brent. Sona is expecting so I know soon enough I will lose him to the family. I would love to have some consistent running partners but it never seems to work out that way. My friend Laura, would fit the bill but she’s super busy with work and her young family. I don’t have a lot of runner friends in the city so that makes the pool small.

Anyway …. I digress ….  we started out it was -10C or something but it actually -21C with the windchill. We had to tread slowly for a good bit of the run because everything seemed to freeze over night. Some spots were so slippery that I had to almost speed walk. Brent wore some kinda ice thing on the bottom of his sneakers so he fared pretty good.

In case you’re wondering, my posture isn’t that bad. I wore my Nathan vest under my jacket so the hose wouldn’t freeze. I hate when that happens!

We powered up hills. We slid on ice. We peed in bushes (okay that was me).

Beauty of a 14-K run.

How was your run?

  1. Hahaha, we've all peed in the bushes at some point! Great run! I encountered a slippery section today too where speed walking happened.

  2. Confession: I've never peed in nature while on a run. Does this mean I'm not a "real" runner? I'm limited in my routes because of flood damage, but thankfully public toilets are never too far away 🙂

    1. No public toilets … on Red Deer trails .. they are always closed. You're a real runner! Often I will duck into a store & plead my case.

  3. Ah I've peed in plenty of bushes while marathon training last year. Such a classy lady I am 😉 I went for a run on Saturday and was aiming for 14kms, but nothing was going right. My head and body said no, so completed 7kms and called it a day

  4. I'm so luck to live in southern BC! We have very mild winters and I've always been able to run outside year round in the winter with no problems. On average it's between 5 C and -5 C all winter long with a couple of colder weeks (cold being like -20). The coldest weather I've ran in yet was -32 and that definitely wasn't pleasant but with enough layers it was doable!
