Once again I was inspired by a podcast from the good folks at Trail Runner Nation. The podcast started out about busting myths about ultra running and eventually came around to goal setting. I snagged one action that I am going to start doing right now.
I am going to ask myself every single day:
What step did you take today to help you reach your goal?
As you know, I declared my big goal for Calgary โ to hit 3:45 โ for the whole social media world to hear earlier this year. I researched training plans and settled on Run Less, Run Faster because it is not far off from my training philosophy. (I run a max of 4 days a week & junk miles are banned from my training.)
I’ve been looking forward to running all week. Things did not come together for shorter runs this week. I was stressing over it earlier because I feel like I am behind in my training. (Race is 126 days away) As I listened to the tips and the wise words from the Trail Runner Nation guys, I realized that I did not flake this past week.
In fact I did five things this week that moved me forward in reaching my goal:
- I went to Crossfit three times
- I stretched & did mobility work on the days I was pressed for time
- I ate good & healthy meals
- A few nights of solid sleep
- Read running blogs that inspired & motivated me to get my head into the game
As you see, not all “actions” were physical. Getting quality sleep & fueling my body for hard workouts is so important. I know getting enough shut eye will be the most challenging over the next four months.
Meanwhile I decided to do hill repeats on this sunny Saturday morning. I felt great and I finished strong. While I am training for Calgary right now, the Lost Soul Ultra is at the front of my mind too. Amber told me a few weeks ago that I must make hills a priority in my training. I’m sure all the squatting and such in Crossfit will help too but I am not taking this 50k lightly.
I really, really like this extra push of accountability. The question is programmed in my phone as a daily alarm.
So there you have it … if you set a goal recently, what did you do today to move you forward in reaching your goal?
That's a great philosophy to follow. My goal is to get out of this injury cycle and get stronger to be able to run well! I've been doing some reading and reached out to a coach so I'm hoping that this will prepare me as I get moving!
That's a good step! I hope you find a good coach & get out of injury mode soon!
I am really trying this 'listen to your body' thing…lol. It's very hard sometimes but I think it's quite important. I'm also going to train for a 50k this October. It's also quite hilly, on the roads not the trails. Rest is also something I've been working hard to ensure.
I find rest is the hardest (or sleep rather) because I have a zillion things to do & my mind never shuts off.
i believe i need to not allow excuses. No Excuses. Just action. Do something. And make it ALL count!
Good girl ๐ How's the planking going?
I am subscribing to this podcast NOW!
You know what I did to work towards my goal? I bought a container of colorful gel pens that are going to help me tick off my successes in terms of stretching and working out. I'm terrible for it and I'm making a calendar up today that will make me more accountable!
Love…Love the buff you are wearing…where did you get it???
So glad someone else's selfie shows snow in the background….I follow a lot of southern US blogs and their shorts/tshirt blogs of warm weather are depressing….LOL
Ha ha I hear ya! I am so jealous when I read the US blogs. That's a good idea with the coloured pens. I recommend Trail Runner Nation for sure! (Bought the buff in Phoenix.)
I love finding new podcasts! I'm going to go find that one for sure.
This springs goal is to just be more relaxed about goals and running, and to hopefully have a sub 4:00 hr time in Calgary! Can't wait to see you go sub 3:45!!!
OH I haven't heard of this podcast, love finding new one's. I totally admire you getting out there, I never minded the cold but ice…nope.
The what action can I take guided me all last year and it was extremely helpful.
