Lindsay: I am a Runner

How’s your week going?

Thursday has become one of my absolute favourite days to post because I get to introduce you to a new runner. Please give it up for Lindsay from Calgary! One day soon I hope to meet Lindsay in person. She’s part of the great group of ambassadors that are sharing the love for the Calgary Marathon. Lindsay is running her first 50K ultramarathon to celebrate the marathon’s five decade milestone! I think it’s awesome that she run commutes to work.

Scroll down and learn more about this self-proclaimed distance junkie!

Name: Lindsay Goldthorpe
Age: 25
City: Calgary
Profession: Marketing Manager
Runner Since: 2010

1. Why did you start running? What pushes you to keep going?
I’ve always been a natural athlete and played a variety of sports growing up. When I moved to Victoria to finish my degree I was introduced to an abundance of beautiful trails and pathways. I found a trail running group that met on campus and started tagging along. It was difficult to keep pace with them but they were very supportive and provided endless encouragement. I was in awe by their passion for running, they would discuss races they had completed and races they were training for. One day they suggested I join a race series that started at 3k and worked up to a half marathon. I signed up, and as soon as I crossed the start line of my first race I was hooked!

I’m an ambitious and competitive person. I thrive on setting goals, crossing distances off my schedule and competing against myself. Above all, incredible people run and I’m motivated by getting to know people, their goals and accomplishments. Oh, and who can forget the shiny medals!

2. What is your running/fitness routine for a typical week?
I run commute to work Mon-Friday (3.4k). I do 3-4 training runs a week which include hills/speed, tempo and LSD. I do weights/core twice a week and go to hot yoga once a week to force myself into stretching.

3. What is your favourite distance to run? Why?
I’m a distance junkie! I absolutely love training for and running full marathons. Marathons are an emotional and physical roller-coaster; I like that they push me to be comfortable with the uncomfortable… and the feeling that overcomes me when crossing the finish line is like nothing else. I also like that I can race a 5k, 10k or half-marathon with friends at a moments notice, and still call it a training run.

4. Best running memory?
The Rio de Janerio Marathon was one of my most memorable for many reasons:
  • I ran this race with Team Diabetes, raising over $7,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association and running in memory of my grandfather and uncle who both suffered from diabetes
  • It’s the official marathon course for the 2016 Olympics
  • The course is primarily ran along seven of Rio’s most popular beaches
  • A local man kept me company for ¼ of the race
  • I chatted with an Aussie who was running marathon number 4 on his journey to complete a marathon on every continent
  • Every time I took a walk break local runners shouted vámonos (let’s go) as they passed. At about 20k I started saying it back to them as I passed … with a smile of course
  • I won a trophy… 3rd in my age category (due to the lack of 20-year-olds that run marathons in Rio)

5. Do you run solo or with a group?
Both. I’m always up for company but I’m happy running by myself if schedules don’t align.

6. What is your dream race?
Boston. I haven’t been eager enough to make this a realistic goal quite yet … but one day.

7. How many medals do you own? Where are they displayed?
Lots. They’re displayed in the hallway at home.

8. Do you have any current running goals?
I’m very excited to be training for my very first ultra marathon in celebration of the Calgary Marathon’s 50th Anniversary! I’m also planning on completing my first triathlon this summer.
9. If you could tell your younger (less experienced) running self something, what would you say?
Join a running group or clinic. Actually follow a training plan. Consuming food (gels) while running is crucial.
What I’m still telling myself? Stretch!
10. Is there anything I didn’t ask you had you that you would like to share?
Distance PRs:
Marathon – 3:50:32
Half Marathon – 1:47:01
10k – 47:44:55
